It almost seems like a compliment to be assassinated considering this cast of greatness.

John F. Kennedy
John Lennon
Martin Luther King
Mahatma Gandhi*
Robert Kennedy
Abraham Lincoln

I almost wouldn't mind being shot in the United States. In the US it seems to be a positive thing to be incarcerated (e.g., Timothy Leary) or gunned down.

I'm just saying. But anyway, where are the conspiracy theorists?

*Not shot in US but still shot. :^^:

You just want to be banned so that you can then pretend to join the cast of greatness.

How petty. People need to reach greatness on their own, through their own effort. No one's going to assassinate you into greatness, so now go kill yourself.

Were those assassinations or just murder? Though if you are radical and revolutionary, you are bound to upset some people.

In 2011 alone there were 11,000 determined gun homicides and 1.5 million prisoners in the US; without counting back to the 1960s, or even the 1860s, there were enough statistics of "non-great" people to offset a list of popular assassinations and prisoners.

I'm just saying. But anyway, where are the conspiracy theorists?

And a lot of idiots with access to those guns. They do have a gun culture there, followed by drinking.. Yet I don't understand how their gun related crimes are so high .

I feel that I must apologize for them sometimes. As an owner of legal yet controversial firearms, I understand that the idiot is to blame, rather than the metal/polymer/wood object. It was never a gun problem, always a cultural problem. My current circle of friends all own guns. Most of us are N's with an IQ higher than 110. Not that that has anything to do with it but in all our time shooting we've yet to experience any unfavorable/dangerous incidents, largely because we respect the basic laws of firearm safety. Those laws are deeply ingrained in the minds of responsible gun owners. However, I've been exposed to social circles who were either dropped as babies or born missing some chromosomes, they too, owning guns. Needless to say, their behavior around firearms is more likely to lead to sour incidents. I believe in a certain level of gun control. There should be higher standards for owning a gun.

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

The "well regulated" part is what conservatives don't understand. The rest after that is what liberals don't understand.

Maybe lots of people get fat because there are lots of spoons there?

Whoa, that's a really thin straw-man right there.

First off, in the matter of the obesity-problem in the US, it's not really about the spoons and more about the food. More specifically, it's about the quality of the food. As of now, everything is loaded with starch and sugar. When this kind of food is consumed, it triggers the release of insulin. When the insulin hits the blood-stream, it shuts off the fat from being burned and instead stores it. You get an intake of 3 000 calories, but only 2 300 (or whatever) is available for your metabolism. You store calories instead of burning them. Ergo, you get fat. So in this instance, no, lots of spoons are there because people are getting fat. Not the other way around.

So you see, without the bad quality food, people wouldn't be fat. Without the guns (or with less of them) people wouldn't kill eachother with guns (as much).

Do you think it's stupid to arm oneself?

People can eat without spoons. People don't get shot without guns.

Without people eating the bad food, they don't suffer the negative health effects. There are better foods around and they know it. Without people being stupid and irresponsible around firearms, no one suffers the negative health effects. The presence of something has less to do with it's effect on society than how society acts on it's presence. In Washington D.C. and Chicago, youth are subject to strict gun control and low social standards, the gun crime is out of control though. In Zurich, the youth are subject to less gun control, yet a higher social standard, and the gun crime is lower.

Yes, we have many fat people in the US, but the obesity rate is higher in Australia. (Unrelated, just thought like bringing it up)

Do you think it's stupid to arm oneself?

I'm not sure. That's a matter of opinion, and a broad, unspecified question. If you've been properly instructed on how to use the weapon safely and when not to use it, I guess it's not stupid. If you have a fascination with a weapon and go out to buy it with no previous experience, and a track record of irresponsibility, then it would be stupid.

No, but they can still hurt themselves with stupidity. Perhaps we should make people smarter and solve all problems at once!!

Interesting perspectives. I can certainly agree that gun-violence is more of a symptom than the disease itself. That doesn't mean that we can't treat the symptom, on the other hand. But of course, a higher standard of living is the true answer.

I'm not sure. That's a matter of opinion, and a broad, unspecified question. If you've been properly instructed on how to use the weapon safely and when not to use it, I guess it's not stupid. What I'm getting at is the tendency to point everything to people and little to other factors. Like the existance of poor people, not because there naturally isn't a seat for them in the game of revolving chair, but because they were the worst.

If arming oneself is smart or stupid based on whether you yourself are smart or stupid (can a stupid person really be properly instructed?) creates sort of a logical loop-hole, where all stances sort of lose all of their power. Environmentalism or consumerism? Answer: stupid people could ruin it. Republicans or democrats in office? That depends. Who has the less stupid people? Why care about the underlying principles of the subject when we can instead focus on the traits of people?

I tend to see humans as one, and very flexible. If stupid people are able to be reckless with guns, that means humans can be reckless with guns. If thieves can rob and steal, that means humans can rob and steal. It's not just them either. If you were as desperate as they were, you would probably do the same.

There will always be stupid people, and that's exactly why we should take precaution around dangerous stuff. Since we're in a society together, we sort of have to restrict some of our rights so that lunatics don't go off and kill everyone. That's why private citizens doesn't have the right to nuclear arms, and for the same reason, I think guns should be restricted.

Guns don't kill people, people with guns / knives / hammers / cars / bombs / etc. kill people.

But it's easier to kill a person with a gun than a spoon.

You could make a grand list of things that could kill people more effectively than a gun. A lot of those items might go under the blanket term of 'bomb', but you can make strong explosives that will kill dozens of people faster than an AR-15 using materials more available and easier to get in most places than a gun. Of course constructing those devices takes knowledge, whereas anyone can use a gun.
