What type of music do you listen too to ward off distractions and focus on your work?

I usually play Nightcore and Eurodance videos off Youtube. They are loud enough to shut the world off and the rhythm helps me keep my own work tempo up as well.

Side effects include swaying and head-bobbing but I guess my colleagues are used to my weird actions whenever I have earphones on.

The absence of sound is best for concentration, which includes the absence of other people around.

If this cannot be achieved, or if the preferred work requires mood augmenting, the music selected may vary from heavy metal to solo piano pieces.

If the music is good, it can become a distraction, if it isn't good, then it becomes a source of irritation, unless there are other sounds which would become more distracting when not suppressed with the more direct and purposeful sound.

Unfortunately with my female colleagues working in the same room as I am, those conditions are quite impossible to achieve.

Chattering Co-workers are sometimes detrimental to the productivity of others, it can get even worse when they try to engage the rest.

You seem to be looking for ideas of the possible music that could be used to that effect.
These two are an example of what sets the right mood for me at work:

my usual acid house and electro and techno and such are rather distracting. some ambient can be good, like some new-style psy/ambient stuff like ultimae records etc. classical/baroque is great for projects.

IDM/braindance is probably the best answer. old autechre and aphex twin albums: incunabula, amber; analogue bubblebath, surfing on sine waves. their newer albums distract me more. anything by bola (my favorite). definitely bola. aoki takamasa's "silicom". ametsub's "the nothings of the north". maybe some pleasant stuff like mum or freescha. or accessible stuff like air. but mostly the braindance music i listed.

It depends on my mood as to what I play, but yes, I usually have to play it pretty low so that I don't end up focusing on it instead of my work. Sometimes it's easier not to play anything.

If I'm studying, generally something quiet and instrumental. Brian Eno, Erik Satie, Sun Ra, some John Cage. <3

When I was in grad school I'd always spend all semester researching then write the essay the day before deadline, as I found my creative energies just come together under pressure. For honey badger mode (i.e. 'DESTINY DRIVE GO NO FEAR NO FAILURE!') I humbly recommend Strapping Young Lad's album City. :D:phear:

I can concentrate best listening to relatively simple garage rock. The Sonics, Blue Cheer, ? and the Mysterians, The Litter, and MC5 are top of my queue. They're not so mesmerising that I can't concentrate, but they're good enough to listen to for hours.

Unless you're referring to work as menial labor, thus, I would say most unprecedented music that isn't abrasive.

Well I need to sift through a lot of laws, research agreements, journal articles and research projects. It gets pretty boring sometimes since the paragraph/item that I need is buried within hundreds of pages of info.

Post-rock and ambient, mainly. With a good dose of German experimental rock from the 70's.

Post-rock favourites:

This Will Destroy You.
The Album Leaf

for something less mellow, some 'krautrock':
CAN
Neu!
Harmonia & Eno '76 (Tracks and Traces)

Anything by Brian Eno, the king of ambient.

Boards Of Canada, an ambient-house outfit.

Phillip Glass and Steve Reich or their minimalist classical

Finally, if I'm not needed to concentrate that hard, i'd listen to a bunch of experimental electronic/hip-hop artists such as Nosaj Thing, Daedelus and Busdriver coming out of LA. Really cool stuff.

I usually Pandora "Brian Eno", headphones on, ear plugs in.
Idk...I just like the muted ambient music in the background at a drop above what I can really hear, kinda just enough for my subconcious to float along to it while I piledrive out all my work due the night before.

there are many binaural/hemi sync tracks designed for concentration.
simple white noise might be best for blocking out noise of coworkers or similar. listening to binaurals all day long would give you a headache.

I don't know man, I might figure out the secrets of the universe and achieve Transcendence. That will hurt my job performance pretty bad.:D

For me that's partially true. I do find that through the day music can be an augmentation to my concentration, much better than other stimulants. It has to be classical music (well that's the only music I like anyhow), and usually happens in the early afternoon.

I like total quiet in the morning until noon, then some music. Usually pre classical era - Corelli, Bach and such.

it's a real danger, but at least you won't fall asleep with these high frequency waves that resemble outward focus in the manner of a ritalin or caffeine high.
