All my life, I've been bothered by how people use the word "excuse". An excuse is something which actually excuses you from fault or responsibility in something. Like having a dentist appointment is an excuse to leave work. However, the word is used differently. It's become a synonym for attempting to invent an excuse which isn't actually true or, if it is, doesn't count as an excuse. An excuse excuses. A reason may not, yet it is still responsible for a situation. I like to distinguish between the two. I tend to explain my problem in short before explaining why something requiring an excuse is explained. I offer my reason and any pertinent information. It's the person in charge's job to determine if it's an excuse.
