not a minecraft player but thought this would be a cool project to do on my raspberry pi. If enough people are interested, here is what I am going to do:

get a heatsink and proper thermal paste, then overclock from
arm_freq=700 (CPU)
core_freq=250 (GPU+Cache)
sdram_freq=400 (RAM)

to

arm_freq=1600
core_freq=600
sdram_freq=700 (maybe slightly more)

yes, that's a more than 2x overclock! (guided a friend of mine through the process).

Then, get minecraft running, and let you guys enjoy it!

What do you say?

On such a weak server and with standard lags due to the distance of users.
hmm, calculate how many watts you burn and if it is really a valuable experience, better than gathering on the already existing server.

I suppose there are tens of empty servers with good bandwidth and framerates.

a raspbi takes about 10-15W overclocked I think. At those speeds though it's surprisingly capable of running a small server (people successfully run minecraft servers on raspbis at much slower speeds, 1000/500/600)

Btw, ping where I live is about 30ms, so not much server side lag :)

Just realized that for practical reasons I'd have to shut down the server in about 3 weeks, so not worth it I suppose. Will still be doing the overclock though I'll let you guys know where I get to (since I won't be using it for anything I'll be pushing it real hard, perhaps for a more than 3x overclock, but stable of course)

Power consumption is very low, seems efficient.

You say that, it is ARM; that means 0.3 GFLOPS (overlclocked about 2.5x) at 10-15W. Intel x86 on the other hand is (overclocked) 120 gflops at about 150-200w.

Still very capable of running a minecraft server
