Hello my name is Michael... since there is an intro forum I guess I should use it.
I am 17 years old from the western US and currently college bound for a Bachelors in architecture. I could say more but there isn't much premise.. I will probably use this forum for spitting out questions just to satisfy my curiosity for how others respond. Nice to meet you!

Hello Michael, very nice to meet you!
Have you already been admitted to college at your age? That's quite impressive, isn't it?
Good choice anyway, architecture is really interesting, and often beautiful as well.
Feel free to spit questions at me anytime, but do not be disappointed if you have to wait for the reply! I think that goes for everyone at this forum, too. Slow but sturdy, eh? ;)

Thanks for the reply Kahe! Actually no I have not been admitted .. there are still a few hoops to jump through. But anyways, Yes I love architecture and I cannot stop thinking about it :D If all goes well I will begin next fall. My main drawback is that I am interested in too many things to focus so much on one, maybe I will loose my enthusiasm? But whatever.. Are you in school? What is your course of study? or anyone who wants to answer?

Hi username, welcome.

Once in the dim dark past I briefly thought about studying architecture,.. so much to do and only one life!

Are you familiar with Pattern Language?

Pattern language.. I have crossed it a few times but not wholly. Sorry I am wikilazy, haha. So much to do! thanks for the reply.

Right now my arch material is... "101 things I learned in Architecture School" - Matthew Frederick and "Narutal Architecture" by Alessandro Rocca. And a little feng shui on the side

edit: oh yeah, would you like to elaborate? What is pattern language?

Yup, I'm a student too. Field of study is Economics, for no good reason. I guess Norway is one of the few countries in the world where it is socially accepted, and relatively economically safe, to start an education "just to see if it gets interesting". :D

...now I'm also curious about pattern language.

That is some quality school philosophy right there.. Mine in somewhere around there also  . Great how all the interesting fields seem to gravitate towards not having a job later on, haha.

Heh, it's true! Employment and interests generally doesn't add up in my case. We don't need any more historians or social scientists... or general staff officers. :D

But I'm sure architects will be needed no matter what; living indoors isn't just a fad. What kind of styles and buildings are you into then? A particular epoch or culture you are fond of? There's a lot of art and human accomplishment in architecture, I think, and much to admire.

I like the idea of deriving from all cultures and styles. But I would say I am especially fond of traditional Chinese, Moroccan and English(Hobit maybe? haha) style building. I guess architects will always have there place, but there is probably the few lofty positions along with the sea of run-of-the-mills . Ideally I would have my own firm, but that takes resources.. maybe the economist could help me with that ;)

Damn I bet it is freezing over there is Norway, I'm cold and I am down here in Oregon... Morrocan will be out of the picture then >:O

That's a point, properly insulating Moroccan-style buildings could be hard.
Better if you start building a grand, warm and cozy renaissance-like chateau for me, don't you think? I'll hire you to do it when I become filthy rich one day. And after you have completed that, we'll discuss financing your company, right? ^^
(a side note about climate in Norway - it isn't as cold as it's cracked up to be. Here in the middle of the country temperature rarely drops below 15F. However in the inland northern counties, you'll freeze - throughout 2006 I was stationed as an infantryman there with winter temperatures falling to -30F. Compulsory military service is wonderful!)

Sounds like a plan. Would you like a drawbridge and moat as well?

(Is it moderate because of all the ocean exposure? hmmm)

Hi again to you both, apologies I've not checked in for a little while - for the lowdown on pattern language check out http://www.patternlanguage.com/

I have a friend who really has a itch to live in an earth sheltered house - a hobbit home! Except he wants to design and build it himself, and unlike me he has no need for space or light. I'm afraid I'd suffocate in the building he is dreaming up!

Not that earth-sheltered can't be done well, but if you're allergic to daylight and don't care if your head is virtually scraping the ceiling!

I'm a would-be designer - I'd like to design my own home using the guidelines of pattern language. If I ever returned to study, I'd be tempted to do architecture. I think the shells we build for our mortal bodies have the most profound influence on our well-being (or lack of it). I would approach architecture as a form of personal and cultural healing - it is time we discarded housing that harms the human psyche.

Hi username! Drawbridge, moat, guardhouse and armoury - keep it coming!
If you can somehow fit a Versailles-like garden around it all, much the better.
Oh, and I'll need a huge staff of people willing to live in servitude, do they come with the building? ;)
Nah, I'll stop right there - no need for anyone to more than suspect I'm a terrible, vain person. And yes, the Gulf Stream provides us with some milder weather on the coast than on the inland. Of course, you get all the rain then. Oh well.

Loveofreason, I just checked out your link to pattern language - it seems quite interesting, but is it radically different from today's practice of including utility and aesthetics in buildings? Are there more rules or formulas to consider?
Any examples of housing that harms the human psyche?
I never gave a thought to my surroundings being bad for my mind, so I'd better know, yes? (my things lying sprawled everywhere hopefully doesn't count!) :D

If a hobit was our size he would probably build in proportion! :D I'm like you.. I would spend all my time near the few windowed rooms near the entrance... not the best use of a house.

Feng Shui takes building harm to the extreme. Probably overlaps pattern language in some ways.

Kahe I will start a breeding program immediately for the staff supply. I hope labor laws are loose in Norway because they will be around 13 when I need them. I will feed them good in the meantime.
