anxiety and depression

Not seeking medical advice, just others opinions.

The reason I have been feeling bad (anxiety) is that I hold everything inside. This blocks me from feeling things. Like physical and emotional pain. I hold my depression inside.

If I am able to inhibit myself rather than repress it I absorb it and I feel better. (Impulse control)(integration). When negative affect emerges and I am able to work with it things improve.

My psychiatrist prescribed me a new medication (Hydroxyzine). Since I have been taking it (4 days) I have been sleeping more, my body is looser, muscles more relaxed. My body aches more, I am feeling pains that were their just not conscious. Anxiety is 80% gone. I can feel the music I listen to is greater intensity in my body.

These are the 3 medications I am on currently.

Gabapentin
Nerve pain medication and anticonvulsant
It can treat seizures and pain caused by shingles.

Hydroxyzine
Antihistamine
It can treat anxiety, nausea, vomiting, allergies, skin rash, hives, and itching.

Lithium
It can treat and prevent manic episodes of bipolar disorder.

I didn't like hydroxyzine for anxiety, I had to take more than recommended for noticeable anxiolitic effects, and by then I'd be more drowsy. This wasn't very convenient since the times I needed anxiety relief were usually in a social setting that required attentiveness.

Benzos are the go to drug for anxiety of course, but they can be habit forming, which is why my smug asshole of a doctor didn't prescribe them to me despite having anxiety bad enough to require them. Personally I don't find benzos appealing for recreational purposes, yet they are useful for times of severe anxiety.

Phenibut and kava are said to have good anxiolitic effects with most people who take them. From personal experience I thought phenibut was better, yet I hear it will lose it's effectiveness when taken day after day (most things do, but some things faster than others, I'll have to find where I read about phenibut).

What about depression? Are you diagnosed with any form of depression and if so, have you been prescribed anything for it in the past? The only ssri I have experience with is zoloft.

That is what the gabapentin is for I was told.

Compulsions are learned behaviours, which become repetitive and habitual when they are associated with relief from anxiety. OCD is due to genetic and hereditary factors. Chemical, structural and functional abnormalities in the brain are the cause. Distorted beliefs reinforce and maintain symptoms associated with OCD.

OCD has been linked to abnormalities with the neurotransmitter serotonin, and to miscommunication between the different parts of the brain involved in problem solving. In normal usage, when a problem or task is identified in the orbitofrontal cortex at the front of the brain, it is dealt with in the cingulate cortex, and the caudate nucleus is then responsible for marking the problem as resolved and removing any worry over it. In OCD sufferers, it is thought that the caudate nucleus may be dysfunctional and so this resolution never occurs, leading to increased worry and a recurring and ever-intensifying loop in behaviour.

Recent improvements in the understanding of the neuroplasticity of the brain may lead to a potential cure for the disorder. If the obsessive compulsive behaviour is consistently identified as such by the sufferer (so that, instead of thinking “I need to wash my hands”, the patient gets into the habit of thinking “it is my OCD which is making me think that I need to wash my hands”), a neuroplastic rewiring of the brain can be induced over time, so that the caudate can be used to work for, rather than against, the patient, in a constructive manner. Recent trials in this kind of behaviour therapy, sometimes referred to as "exposure and response prevention", have produced some very positive results

Vitamin D and magnesium are sometimes enough to handle depression/anxiety. I've never been a fan of pharmaceuticals. Do you have any nutrient/hormone deficiencies (NutrEval, a comprehensive hormone panel, a thyroid panel, and maybe even genetic testing)?

If caused by known issues, maybe you could try sorting them out? There are many blogs, books, groups, YouTube videos, etc with approaches. There's also mediation and/or brainwave entrainment audio.

Cease taking all those immediate medications at once. Anxiety and depression is just caused by a lack of money & cash making you have a limited choice in the things you can do. I still get it too. So, you get anger if you can't find a job or work for more money, as a surface reason or excuse to mask your lack of self worth. That also affects your relationship with people. Another thing is a healthy diet, instead of eating junk food all the time, to make you feel better. You might start to feel weirder without the meds. You or people can't blame the medications for any behavior or anger/aggression that pops ups and happens for a good go away remedy, only temporary in lasting effects in reality having irreparable side effects. If you want you can get back on them, otherwise, after a while I'd see what it's like then after tapering off, I'd see if that makes you less depressed. Find better hobbies and learn more computer programming.

Anxiety for me is caused by looking into the future and not having hope because of it. The thing is, you can fight it. What I tell myself is that even if xyz happened it wouldn't be that bad (and this is saying a lot because I can imagine some pretty terrible circumstances). Why? Because my hope is in Christ. I look to the joy that Jesus gives, not the pain involved and this gives me hope.
