I don't typically try to type people because normally I don't care very much or find them easily understandable/digestable without delving any deeper. But I recently met someone and I'm having a lot of trouble. I've thought they were a fellow INTP, ISTP INTJ and maybe other things. Perhaps I'm clouded in my judgement - it's also been a long time since I've been interested in MBTI.

  • Does a lot of DIY projects.
  • Get drained from social situations and doesn't particularly care for them.
  • Enjoys hosting a good time for others or bringing others together, however. I've asked about this and he's stated that people are too tied up in ethics and sometimes he wants to feel good and sometimes feeling good just means making others feel good.
  • He corrects people and is bothered when people aren't receptive to being corrected.
  • He asks me what I'm doing later and doesn't seem altogether disappointed if I'm busy - he's stated on more than one occasion he's just 'managing expectations.' Which, to me, sounds like disappointment.
  • He laments on past relationship failures and doesn't understand how people that he grew up with could easily throw away some friendships or how people that once stated he was important to them can't get time to hang out with him.
  • He's very physical. He likes to be touched and likes touching, in general. He's not touchy-feely with strangers, or anything, but he longs for touch. He is no stranger to casual sexual encounters.
  • He's very matter of fact. He speaks plainly.
  • He likes to collect "useless" information. Things he can't actually use practically. He also has a decent amount of practical information, however.
  • He's not indecisive. While I will wonder about what I want to do for about an hour and a half, he will come up with what to do or wait patiently for me to do so. Or help me if I ask.
  • Experiences times when he doesn't want anything to do with anyone.
  • Has trouble feeling emotion. He states that he feels enough to know he should feel more and often feels unconcerned with things. He is very upset about this and wants to feel more.
  • He can talk for hours. He also has a very good memory for song lyrics, tv quotes, and movie quotes. It's odd. He's very silly.
  • His thought process is about the same as mine, I believe. I understand how he gets from Point A to Point H very easily and vice versa.
  • He's generally agreeable, I find.
I hope this is enough information. I don't know. I feel like I should know enough to figure this out but I keep getting pulled in so many directions and I thought it might be nice to bounce ideas off of others.

I'm seeing a lot of Fe in that description. First guess would be INFJ.

edit: also you seem to be an INFJ, too. You seem to view the past in a pattern-based sense, and speak a fair bit about relationships.

I also thought that but I thought it was odd since the personality type is rather rare. More than that, I guess I'm confused by their apathy about most things in their life so I think there's a lot of T, but, Fe just seems so pertinent in how they operate.

However, they really just don't care about the world at large. He has no interest in politics, homelessness, things like that. He just wants to be happy. I don't think he feels guilty for it... I don't think he feels guilt for much of the things he does feel, if they are "bad."

From my research, INFJ's in forums and on reddit just seem to be really into politics and if they're not it's because they get too sad.

Edit: Though, I suppose his desire to feel more is also important to note... Perhaps this is correct and I'm just blinded by the apathy.

Apathy is probably just an overactive Ti.

I'm an INFJ and I have very little interest in politics. I also don't know how rare the personality type actually is, no one knows yet, really.

I don't have a lack of interest in politics because it makes me "sad". It's just not interesting. I had somewhat of an interest in political philosophy when I was in a teenager, but very little interest at all since then.

Politicians seem to be usually Te or Si dom, though there are probably a lot of NFs with leftist views, but it's mostly concrete cultural elements (Si) and environmental structuring (Te), institutions and corporations and the like.

So idk, I don't think this link between INFJ and politics is any where near what you think it is. Though INFJ and activism probably has a correlation. INFJs like to go against the prevailing system, exposing corruption and the like.

Actually I do have an interest in something political. The mental health system. I am very against how people diagnosed with mental health problems get treated by the system, and I am willing to take action to help remedy these issues.

Also added in my post before that I think you're INFJ too, in case you missed it.

I'll have to find where I read this, but it's supposed to be the rarest type. Like 1% or something like that.

I'm highly interested in interpersonal relationships... I always have been. When I was younger I had a lot of trouble understanding people and I felt very much motivated to fix this. I enjoy sociology, psychology, and, to a lesser extent, anthropology. I find people more interesting than mechanics. I like words a lot and literature. I don't know. People are so interesting and varied. I like to study them.

I tend to google "love," and "oxytocin," a lot. I'm messy and while I like the idea of structure, I really just... I can't be BOTHERED. I have enough trouble keeping my computer from being a mess of files and everything named some variation of "asjkashgbduasd". I procrastinate like crazy. Deadlines? I laugh in the face of deadlines.

I feel like I may just be an INTP with a very strong Fe developed. I am open to interpretation, however,

I don't really feel motivated politically or activism. I kind of just think, "Huh. That's a lot of effort for something I really just don't care about." I suppose I just don't think it'll have that much of an impact and other people can sort it out, instead.

--

I feel like this person and I are eerily similar so I thought they were an INTP, but I cannot fathom the idea of feeling pleasure because I went out with a group of people and they... enjoyed themselves... No me gusta, no, but thank you. We get along very well, though.

edit: HEY. You answered one of my questions ages ago about help with am ESFJ. That's so fun. Hi, again, this is awesome, I love this. Hi.

You're talking about the Te/Si idea of structure here.

INFJ structure is like... striving towards long term goals and fixations (Ni), and the dynamics at play in interpersonal interactions (Fe).

Te is planning and structuring and deadlines. Si is routine, attention to detail, and specific events that have occurred or will occur.

The statistics are based on test results, but if the tests are unreliable (which they are), then we don't really know what the actual percentages are.

Hm, interesting... I will do some research. How are you so certain of yourself being INFJ?

I have developed a method of typing people by analysing forum posts, and through this method, I am a clear example of an INFJ - and this includes posts I made before I began identifying myself as an INFJ. I also have other related methods of analysing a person through such things as vlogs, and a method that only works for myself (directly, and others indirectly) based on phenomenology/analysing cognitive processes directly.

I have also clarified that type is not a matter of "one person = one type" but that we have, potentially, elements of all 16 types, and multiple permutations of the functions even within a given type, but that people generally have a predominant type with its default function order (the default function order for INFJ being Ni-Fe-Ti-Se--Ne-Fi-Te-Si).

Interesting. I think you are definitely right on the last paragraph. I'm looking into some things about INFJ's and a lot of it does resonate with me... But so much of the things about INTPs do as well.

Perhaps it as as you say - just a mixture in my case but more so INFJ. This is very interesting news. I never tried to look at anything to do with Fe because... It's very odd. Everyone whom has ever known me (except this person I'm discussing in this thread) has always penned me as being generally emotionless or robotic, and then later that I'm crazy emotionally, and then they flip-flop back and forth. Although, most of my relationships have been rather toxic...

Thank you for the food for thought.

It's more likely an over-use of Ti, rather than a high level of INTP cognition. INTP cognition is rarely high in an INFJ. (I'm pretty sure of that being your type, my method gave me clear results)

If you're overusing Ti, then maybe the Fe comes out too strong and in an unhealthy manner because it was being neglected so much.

May I ask more about your method? Is it something you can give a brief description of, or if you are comfortable, I would enjoy a detailed imparting.

The basic method is to divide the post into paragraphs, then, using whatever you know about the functions, determine which function each paragraph best represents - keeping in mind that all paragraphs will be flavoured by the dominant function, and that non-standard orderings are possible.

So, when I was looking through your posts, what I saw was that there were a few posts where you started off by referencing your past in a pattern-based fashion, followed by a paragraph where you referenced relationships. There was one post where you seemed to go Ni-Ti-Fe, but the topic was related to introversion, so that alternate ordering makes sense.

It also works with vlogs (if they're unedited). Sections of roughly 2 minutes each represent a particular function.

So you want to match the cognitive function order of a type with the function order of the posts, e.g. INFJ will go Ni-Fe-Ti-Se etc. and form your conclusion when a significant number of posts are all pointing in the same direction.

As for how to know which function a given paragraph refers to, that's more nuanced, and until I give it more thought and write some kind of guide, you'll just have to go by a collated understanding from various other sources.

(also, particularly if responding to someone, sometimes a function other than the dominant is used for the first paragraph, and the function order typically resumes from there in the ordinary fashion, e.g. if responding to a point of logic, an INFJ may go Ti-Se-Ne-etc.)

Yada, yada, take people as they come, there is no magical formula to predict or instrumentalize them. Period? Good.

I find it quite useful to know peoples type. Or at the very least, their two main functions. It is pretty useful to know how a person will react/be when they’re in “auto-pilot” mode.

However; it does lose quite a bit of usefulness the more intimate / close you get to someone. I wouldn’t reccomend using typology to make any big decsions there. Individuals are very unique.
