The shallowness of human consciousness leaves enough room for the delusion of free-will to appear. It may also be where art and self-lessness are born. Larger understanding of all things would probably be overwhelming emotionally, as the work to be done in order to reduce suffering in the world would appear beyond daunting. Being happy and positive is thus a meticulous exercise of beautiful, unbound and implausible denial of reality (which is just a set of arbitrary constructions, or realities anyways) in order to promote another. This is also how one can invert the epistemological route of hope, from the structure to the cognizant, backward from the cognizant into the structure. That might settle the motivation. What is left for us is to learn all the means to effect positive change and apply them.
