Just wondering if anyone else has read this horror short fiction. It's easy to find a ebook copy in any format.
The story is about two men- a confident but, self-conscious Englishman and, a strong quiet Swede. The two men are canoeing down the river Danube in the early 20th century. Kinda of an odd pair but, share an adventurous spirit.
The river is rising and becoming stronger as they travel,, glacier melt. All is well until they decide to camp on a sandy eroding river island covered in willow bushes. The whole valley is full of willow bushes .
Its a quick read.. breathtaking inner dialog from the main character. Lovecraft called it the "greatest work in English short fiction" I don't know about that but, it is the most breathtaking piece of short fiction I've read.

Blackwood was super prolific, the more popular ones are The Wendigo, The Haunted Island, The Minotaur, The Haunted House & Others

Kinda a pre-Kafka. I say that because of the intensity of the short stories and the conviction of fantastical elements. Blackwood's era was more turn of the century, with more traditional elements(ghost, spirits, folklore). He was ahead of his time in conveying the details and intensity of these elements.

If you are a fan of Kafka, then you will truly will enjoy The Willows
