Captain Beefheart

The past few years King Crimson were my favourite band and I didn't think i'd ever find anything that surpassed them in my eyes. For those that remember me when I joined the forum you might remember I had In the Court of the Crimson King as my avatar.

Well a few months ago I discovered Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart and while at first I really didn't understand it it really grew on me, right now i'd say it's the best thing i've ever heard. It's like every musician is going off on a tangent doing his own thing [mostly with completely detuned instruments] playing their instruments in all the wrong ways, with some some random guy yelling, reading weird poetry and wailing insanely in the forefront.. yet it's amazing, whenever I play it it's the highlight of my day.

I've just noticed that I havn't seen anyone mention him so far, are there any other fans out there? For those that love really avante garde, eccentric music I cannot suggest it enough.

So where's the beef?

I've actually just started listening to the Captain, and I'm also a big fan of King Crimson. Also, your description of how much you love captain beefheart describes another one of my favorite bands The Mars Volta because when they play it's almost like everyone is playing as loud as they can while paying no attention to what everyone else doing around them and there's 9 of them!

I actually bought a Mars Volta CD a while ago, they sound like one of those bands I should love but I wasn't that impressed upon the first few listens, I promise to give them another shot.

Well it depends which cd you listen to because they all sound completely different. I recommend starting with De-loused in the Comatorium. I actually didn't like Mars Volta when I first heard them but for some reason I just kept coming back (it took me about a couple of weeks of off/on listening to develope a taste for their music).
