Every single one of us is an ape. One can't be a human if one isn't an ape. Therefore to claim that someone isn't an ape is to deny them their humanity. Actually it is saying they aren't even closely related to us.

But to call someone an ape is to place undue emphasis on their uncelebrated aspects, right?

Technically speaking, humans are not apes.

Hmm yes, I see now that "great apes" is the same as hominids. I guess we are apes - great ones.

(David Attenborough voice) and yet after all this time the INTPs continue to discuss semantics, remarkable.

Eh, at which point you demarcate between categories is pretty arbitrary unless you can show certain relations between those categories that emerge with the new demarcation that can be generalized in some useful (vague term here) way.

To me, what's an even more fascinating question is why can we understand language (and articulate, with visual/auditory symbols) but apes and other creatures can't. What is the mechanism that prevents them from doing so.

Other apes probably wonder why we don't get them. We must seem pretty dumb to them.

I mean, even my cat gets fucking frustrated when I don't speak his language.

Flock of sheep behind fence:

- "Wow, those stupid two legged animals are staring dumbly at us again"

i agree.
if you want offend someone you have to be careful not to call them an ape.
risk they will want to form family bonds is too high.

Apes are superintelligent creatures living in a 4-dimensional universe. The reason they seem dumb to us is that we only see the 3-dimensional projection of them.
