Wow, this is something I've been thinking about quite a bit recently. Technology thus far has been expanded so fast and so quickly that it is becoming increasingly clear that there will likely be a singularity in our lifetime.
What would a future look like with robots that imitate human beings very closely? Robots that are pre-programmed to never disobey and have enough processing capabilities to take over most if not all lower skilled jobs? We already have vacuum robots capable of automatically cleaning one's house better than many cleaning services (and automatically charges itself too). Although many people say that such a thing happening will not occur for a long time, I feel like they are right for the wrong reasons.
When people talk about such things not becoming ubiquitous, they assume that the technology level is far out of reach. However, I feel like this is the wrong reason. Advances in the engineering and technology fields have been actually exceeding the projected curve of advancement (an exponential curve). Rather, such things will not ubiquitous because the cost of buying a robot and maintaining it will still cost more than paying 10.25 an hour to an entry level worker. However, by current growth rates, it does seem like such robots may become a reality in 25 years, and empirical data in the past suggests that we may actually be too pessimistic in this judgement.
The prostitution industry on the other hand, is not immune to this. You do not pay prostitutes or beautiful women 10.25 an hour to suck your dick. There was a brothel in Europe where a sex bot brothel opened up. They charged only about 40 dollars cheaper than real prostitutes, yet it proved extremely popular. It also generated so much negative attention that it was forced to move. Individuals who have bought dolls from them have also stated that the feeling of the dolls are indistinguishable from real life, if properly prepared (which explains the still high price- as preparing the dolls kills the mood and is exceedingly troublesome). Again, this will improve with time.
China is also so scared of them that they have implemented a nation wide ban on realistic sex robots.
If an extremely attractive Kate Upton model robot was produced, with basic human intelligence, I am quite certain there would be countless people who would buy it. $300,000 to buy a model companion that would clean your house, take care of your kids, and allow you to play out any sexual fantasy you want would actually be a very cheap price to some people. In fact quite a fair bit cheaper than prostitutes assuming you use the robot more than 2 years. Again, prostitution and sex union workers in Europe protested very fiercely to the sex robot brothel, because of the competition it brought (sex robots are cheaper, and also safer).
Of course, there will always be human beings who prefer other human beings over robots. However, this will still have a noticeable effect on the prostitution industry. Even if only 25% of male consumers would not mind having relationships with a robot, that could cause far reaching effects. Just look at China. With just 18% more males than females, the social unrest is extremely worrying.
What about women? Well, according to surveys, 3 times more men entertained the idea of screwing a robot than women. (Though I wonder why, one would think both sexes would be equally interested).
Now, what would it look like in the future when you had extremely beautiful/handsome robots that feel human, talk like humans, and learn like humans? What effect would this have on society? In fact, let's even throw in artificial wombs/artificial insemination. What effect would this have? Again, this may seem far in the future, but it may not be. This may become a reality very very soon.
(And let's be honest here, how many of you here would use one? How many of you would be willing to buy human companionship with everything you want (beauty, obedience, submissiveness)? Is this as degenerate as slavery?)
