I stumbled across this today and found it incredibly informative. In summary, this is a flash app that makes it really easy to see the links between genres using song samples and descriptions.

Sadly, it hasn't been updated in a decade, but it's still useful, sort of.

It has been updated recently- but he doesn't include music from the last ~8 years because it hasn't all been classified yet (that's what he says anyway). I found it pretty useful since most on the genres are still around today.
