I am in hight school and after 6 months I will have final exams so I have to decide now what to choose. Both, programming and neurology (or neurobiology, psychiatry) interest me, but there are different pros and cons.

Programming will give me more freedom, independance, money, and easy life (I think). After 1 year in college I can get first job or grant which give me money independace from my parents. Also I heard many INTPs enjoy it and for me it's OK.

Neurobiology isn't as easy. I must finish 6 years medicine, boring college. There are no grants, there will be no time for job. There are a lot of stiupid subjects as anatomy or history of medicine. With my character I don't know if I will be strong enough to learn such a stiupid things... But after there is a lot of possibilities. I can be a proffesor (but next 10 years of learning is required....) or nerobiologyst, psychiatrist (after 6 years....), make research, maybe discover something very important. I always was interested about human brain, psychology, people... but I don't know if this is worth theese long and boring years... (more than 15 years to become proffesor). As I wrote, I want to discover something and become famous. Or become someone like House. I want be a genius.

However now, I don't even know what to choose. It's sad that I can't choose both :/

programming seems a better choice imo, from the way you describe your attitude towards the subjects.

Learn programming on your own and take neurology. You can have both but I wouldn't recommend learning neurology on your own.

The biggest factor is if you have the support and help to get through so much college. You don't want to have quit halfway through.

Why you don't recommend learning neurology on my own? I was thinking a lot about it.

The medical field requires you to have credentials. You can program without any schooling all you need is a computer internet and some free time.

I'd go with programming. It enthralls the mind with creative logicalities. Neuroscience is a very interesting field, but it would be quite a time before one can engage in ground-breaking work, as you stated
Whereas with programming, advances are made daily, and all of one's work can be ground-breaking, depending on your creative deposition towards it.

On a related note, I heard about a South-African neuroscientist who is currently attempting to map the whole brain on a computer with a team in Switzerland. If such a feat is achieved, neuroscience will become much more interesting. Perhaps this is worth looking into, as it may be the best of both worlds.

Very interesting article.
Personally I think neurobiology is future, but perhaps for today researches still dependence more on luck than logic, so I don't want to waste my life and don't discover anything special...

I think I'll take programming, for now this is best options. Maybe in future, my childrens will take neurobiology, if it will be more reliably.

The greatest discoveries are the ones that occur when no one else is able to find answers but I can understand the comfort of waiting until discovery is a common occurrence.

I think most of discoverys depend on luck and being in right place, in right time and with right knowledge. Rarele it depends on genius.

I concur.
Serendipity, they call it. An example here is the discovery of cosmic background radiation.

Even when a discovery is made through genius, it is usually an intuitive process, wich is in itself unpredictable and chaotic, a tamer form of luck if you will. Look at the findings of Crick, Newton and even Archimedes. Newton (as the legend goes) was inspired by a falling apple, Archimedes by water displacement in a public bath, and Crick was using LSD.
One can call this intuitive serendipity (Though, what counts greatly is what they did after their discoveries, the compilation and expansion of their ideas. This required good old fashioned work).

Sadly the rarety of the possibility infers genius to the world. Common discoveries are not as often recognized as such. So it would seem to me, you can risk much, possibly your life, on ideas that may make you gain the title of genius or not or you can make small progress every day with certainty with the title of intelligent but even less likely genius.

Some geniuses are not even recognized until they have been dead for decades. Not the kind of fame I would want.

Thus, I am starting programming.
Good, for the reasons you listed. Plus, programming doesn't prevent you from working in neurology. Scientists outsource. A lot. And they need people to do things that they cannot do... like programming. :p (And statistics, GIS, digital imaging,...)
I want be a genius.
You'll never know until you try. ;)

The first step to being a genius.

guinness-beer.jpg

the second step is to become shit faced

The final step is to wake up the next morning. After that you will feel like a real genius.

The image in this spoiler featured explicit content and was removed. Do not post similar content in the future, Grayman.

Does the forum have definitive guideline to explicit content. There seems to be a disconnect in my understanding in comparison to theirs.

Fourth paragraph of the quote text. Although I find it extremely hard to believe that what was posted could be attributed to some sort of "misunderstanding" of the rules and not a blatant desire to revolt and offend.

Shouldn't be very hard to avoid repeating in the future, I imagine.

Don't post pornography, gore, shock images like shit eating, abuse, etc. This should be common sense.

^Agreed. Besides, someone posted a complaint about the image (which rarely happens as we are a laid back bunch) and I agree that it is in poor taste. So we had it removed.

Edit: Can we all just get back to the original OP now?

I am sorry I did not realize this type of thing was subject to social silliness. Babies eat poop, animals eat poop but a grown adult OMG!

Yah it is gross but there have been much worse things here on this forum than poop. We are not in preschool anymore. I was expecting more for someone or myself to be called out for personal attacks but I see nothing. The things we find important...Odd.

I didn't even really pay attention much to the eating although I recognized it as gross as I was just looking for someone with shit on their face to fit my little image pun.

People are odd, and find odd things insulting. I thought the INTP society logical about things of this sort but it seems I was wrong. I'll be sure to tip toe around your sensitivities more. An odd thing to get upset about indeed.

You can do both, take neuroscience as your major. :D

Well OP is a bit old... but whatever. Nowadays it's possible to find programming *everywhere*: programming and geology, programming and architecture, programming and music, programming and history. I'm pretty damn sure theres all sorts of neuroscience projects that involve lots of programming: brain mapping, brain-computer interfaces, AI, etc...

Yes, exactly!
Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary study.
Even when the focus is on Neurology, there are many other studies that should be studied. Otherwise, it won't be any difference with the "real" Neurology.
