What's up with the chat system anyway?
Every time I'm online there's plenty of people logged on to the forum,
but never do I see anyone on the flashchat.
Why is that? Nobody knows it's there? Or is it too confronting?

Personally I just never liked chat. Be it in forums, email or whereever. It had the feel of face to face conversation only it took longer.

It took longer? Well, a forum takes longer than a chat... I would think...
then again it also depends on who you're talking to and whether or not they're talking to other people as well...

Here in a forum, I don't think anyone has any expectations of a reply or that one is forthcoming anytime soon. It's just a matter of posting a message and if someone reads it and wants to respond, fine. If not, also fine. Chat seems more like a real-time conversation. Just less personal than a phone call or face to face. That's just how it feels to me. I'd feel obligated to excuse myself anytime I had to go to the restroom or get something to eat.

I'd like from time to time to chat with you guys, but actually i hate flash...
If we had a decent irc-chat however, i would like that. We could use a Jabberchatroom too, but i guess hardly anyone of you know what Jabber is, so...

*agrees with Ogion*

Flashchat is very slow and occasionally buggy. Why flashchat? Why not IRC?

Instead of wondering why there's no IRC or any other alternative to flashchat, why not present an alternative and see how that goes?

Right now Ogion and I are having a chat on Jabber... how's that for an idea?

I'm using the coccinella client (most platforms supported) on jabber.org
My nick or online identity is [Jules]@jabber.org

On Jabber there is also the possibility for a groupchat...

EDIT: Ok, i created a room for us. It is on the server jabber.org (conference.jabber.org). The name is intpforum. The password is intp.
For you to access it, you have to get a jabber-account and a client. Which ones are available you can see at Wikipedia. If you have questions feel free to ask.
