After playing all RPG's in existence I can confidently say and recommend the Sith Marauder, Imperial Agent and Jedi Knight stories. With some caveats and cliched or plain uncomfortable optional romances, it is one of those rare games that lets you be who you want with your decisions shaping how your character feels.
I would put special focus on MC writing. In most games your character has no story and no personality, here your character is the coolest and has a very distinct feel that you can further refine with decisions. Not all playable stories are equal though, the imperial agent and sith marauder are perfect if you don't want to try more, it's both intelligent writing and great voice acting if you pick a male character (Female voice acting isn't that great sadly).
Playing this game has sold the idea of a fantasy space opera to me. It does the best job of presenting Star Wars as a compelling, serious and immersive universe. This builds on its good predecessors KOTOR 1 & 2 which have fell short in some aspects, but did the most justice to Star Wars out of any media until SWTOR.
I really feel the vision for Sith presented in this one. It's not the typical disney villain, there are moral choices and you can be faustian about getting justice through force. Vengeance feels both right and good as a sith. Being a sith is more about being free, seeking power makes you break the chains and write your own rules and I truly relate to that approach.
The game is free to play until they shut down the servers. Considering it's an older game this incredibly decent story might disappear and that would be a loss. There are very few interactive fiction stories better than this (interactive, meaning where reader makes choices that alter the narrative). Sure, non-interactive stories are both easier to write and are more numerous and I could improve many things about swtor, but that same point goes for everything. Enjoy while it's there
