I am so surprised no INTP has yet to mention The Truman Show. Jim Carrey (the main character) so brilliantly shows how a completely normal and happy person can turn into a rather paranoid and psychotic 'patient', as he experiences his reality gradually slipping (although that's not the main theme; his acting was close to perfect). If anyone is interested in movies with themes about new perceptions of reality, you should really watch this movie.

I've watched so many good movies (they're all out there) i can't really just choose the top 5, but The Truman Show is definitely in there. I don't know exactly where i'd put these, but The Dark Knight, The Godfather, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Der Untergang, The Matrix, Forrest Gump, Inception, American Psycho, Catch Me If You Can, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, Dark City, Fight Club, American Beauty, Annie Hall, The Breakfast Club, The Silence of the Lamb etc. are all on my favorite movies list.

It was an okay movie, it just wasn't "top five material" (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, for me, would have a shot at my top five). Apparently it resonated with you, but it didn't do much for me; and my top five would include movies that resonate and that I can watch over and over again without tiring of them. it doesn't mean "The Truman Show" was a bad movie; the concept was kind of intriguing.

You can say whatever you want. I retain my five star rating. Often professional reviews are made spur the moment, which is a good practice. We're sitting here talking about movies way past their expiration date. Consider how ridiculous doling out a rating for Touch of Evil would be if done today. You rob the film of its context and sense of surprise that way. Any artistic venture is potentially depleted by time and imitation, so distributing awards years later is cheap. I loved the movie at the time, and even if piled-up years sully that sentiment, which has happened before, I would stick to my initial reaction and appraisal.

I have a new list according to what I like right at this moment. I'm not even going to look at my old list. I don't remember what's on it.

1. Ran - Saw in college for a King Lear lecture. Saw it 10 times after that. I really loved it.

2. Blade Runner - It will always be in my top 10 I think. It goes up and down the list but right now it's at #2.

3. Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - My first viewing of this was boring. My second was surreal. My third was mind blowing.

4. Darjeeling Limited - I may just be choosing this one because I haven't seen it in ages and I've been thinking about it recently.

5. Drive - For the pure fun factor.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead -- I was in real physical pain after watching this movie the first time. I laughed a ridiculous amount (completely sober, fyi)

Ondskan (Evil) -- I usually hate (hate!) coming-of-age dramas, but this movie is amazing.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou -- Because of the awesomeness.

Oscar -- It's a comedy. With Sylvester Stalone (I know!) as the straight-man. Somehow it is hilarious and even clever. (The other actors are actually talented)

Serenity -- Because I really, really liked Firefly and I watch it every time I re-watch the season/series.

Here are the plans of war. They're as valuable as your life. And that's putting them pretty cheap. Watch them like a cat watched her kittens. Have you ever had kittens? No, of course not, you're too busy running around playing bridge. Can't you see what I'm trying to tell you, I love you.

10. There Will Be Blood

The Duke approves. The mood that film cultivated was perfect.

Because favorite movie lists are--IMO--a bit pedestrian, I’m going to apply a loose interpretation and list my favorite movies to despise.

My criterion is that my choices are movies that are otherwise popular or acclaimed. Thus, Plan 9 from Outer Space does not qualify, since it is universally recognized as a bad movie and is only beloved because of its unintentional hilariousness.

So in no particular order:

Pretty Woman- Because a hooker with a heart of gold doesn’t get drug addicted, pimp slapped or an STD. She meets billionaires and lives happily ever after. Sure. Just don’t forget to floss.

Batman- The only explanation is that Tim Burton’s visuals were so dazzling, it hypnotized everyone into looking past its stupid script and the absurdity of Michael Keaton as the caped crusader. Nolan and Bale have done the human race a service by making us forget this blight ever darkened a theater.

Titanic- There is a special level of Hell awaiting whoever told James Cameron he could write dialogue. In this special level, one will be forced to watch repeated showings of Titanic for all eternity.

TIE: The Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions- As brilliant and innovative as The Matrix was, the sequels were bound to be a let down anyway. What’s makes them really a letdown? Fights scenes that go on forever, heavy handed philosophizing, and Roy Jones Junior. Speed Racer tends to confirm the Wachowski’s are drinking the same Kool-Aid as Francis Coppola and Michael Camino.

Clash of the Titans- The original kitschy Harry Hamlin version is about a hundred times more entertaining that this convoluted remake.

The Searchers- One of the most acclaimed westerns of all time, and it makes my skin crawl. The Duke looks for his lost niece among the Indians, but only so that he can kill her to save her the shame of being made an Indian. Wow.
