Is there any way to pay someone to upload and keep seeding some files for general people's benefit, because you dont want to be involved for professional reasons..

Say there are some really popular books and study material , or online tutorpaid videos you wish people could download copies or scans, but you dont want to risk dong it personally..

I do not want to pay for a product.

So I torrent it.

I do not want to be caught.

So I pay someone else to torrent it, instead of finding a way to not be caught.

Makes sense.

Yes, you could pay someone to keep seeding your files. I also question the motivation behind this, but if you want to do it there's nothing stopping you.

On major torrent sites there are forum threads dedicated to seeding certain torrents for some time. You can request your seed or request a torrent and it may or may not be provided.

Or you could just hire a seedbox up in the cloud, set it to download what you choose, and then retrieve the files through FTP. With sufficient throwaway email addresses and a disposable payment source it should be pretty safe.

That and using other people's computers.

Never used one, but they are faster to download if there are seeds, so you may only have to hire one for a week or a month. Or you could then transfer them from the seedbox automatically to a cloud account such as Dropbox, or Copy.com. They are easy to set up.

The modern innovation society we enjoy in the U.S. began with Property Rights during the Renaissance. Without them there's no incentive to invent and create. Consider China where there are no such rights; farmers can only rent their land from the Government. There are cultural reasons for this too, but here are the seeds of why China is good at copying and terrible at creating.

So listen; buy your shit. You fuckers are doing nobody, including your sorry selves, a favor by saving a few dollars and stealing intellectual property. If you ever grow up and attempt to actually create something, instead of just sucking on the teats of others, you'll have a glimmer of the importance of paying for value. Without it nobody has incentive to create value.

How about using torrents for legal stuff and products no longer sold (that no reasonable money can buy, undistributed)?

That's what torrents are great for as well and many rely on them for that purpose.

Torrent != Theft

I could go on but that's the core of it. No need to overly generalise or blame the tool.

Property rights have been here since the beginning of civilization, without property rights society cant really function beyond subsistence level. Locke and others just systematized them into theories like the homesteading principle and such. But it might be a non-sequitur to consider IP as an actually property right. How can you own an idea compared to something physical? Who determines what are actual property rights? Honestly, true property rights is more a of fiction than anything else nowadays.

As far as incentives, IP might actually harm competition as it ultimately only always the big players to have the control of certain creations. They are the ones(government, corporations) that have the actual incentive of keeping IP active. The average consumer and producer can't compete in the market with such limitations. Giving value for creating value? That's why you create a service for your work. Nobody cares about ideas, they are dime a dozen and IP pushes out people who don't have access to capital. This harms innovation. Statutory IP is BS. You talk about markets and property rights but believe monopolies on creation is necessary, very interesting.

Are you serious? Go ask a lawyer whether IP (Intellectual Property) has ownership legality.

OK you are serious. I'm not going to take the time to teach you something that would be made abundantly clear with the effort of typing in a search. I like you Analyzer, but this is kind the childish self-justification that all thieves do for their conscience. The one thing that is true about nearly all criminals is that they never believe they are criminals.

Of course I'm aware that IP has ownership legality but I'm talking about the theoretical justification for such which you either seem to not care about for pragmatic reasons or you have a certain personal stake in keeping IP legal. Your reasoning is sound...except that society isn't set up in the proper way as it exists today. Another example, related to this, would be the legal system.

What happens when the "proper" channels fail? You called user Analyzer childish, but you expecting the system to work infallibly as it is seems childish.

Also wtf? did user Claverhouse just post?

Ah the old Ti/Te battle rages onward.

ehhh.... life experience also marks a potential shift on the topic. I was probably more on the abstracted side of things when I was twenty and wasn't living on my own and trying to build things and have the resources to build them. After you deal with a lot of life practicalities and see how certain certain things play out and the good of certain boundaries and their impact, then you might shift a bit.

Or now I can backtrack from my above paragraph and align myself with your comment, reframing your Ti/Te label as subjective/objective in the jungian sense.

It's kind of like...

Analyzer is sort of trying to isolate/abstract a mental image of just what a "property right" truly is, as it pertains to an idea, like..can you actually "own" an idea? What is, what is, what is... He observes the reasoning and evaluates it, accepts what it is trying to say, but then returns once more to the abstracting relationship between his ideas, his thought processes, and those which exist in objectivity.
big-blunt-16x9.jpg

Architect is like: It is, because it is. Look, there it is. This is a "positive affirmation" toward objective criteria and precisely what is meant by extraversion. He cites history and literature, says "look here it is in this book here" and leaves the idea alone as if his reasoning is so sound and perfect as to be self-evident, but does not go any deeper into pondering just what "it is", what is the true nature of ownership of an idea?

The easy, and safe way.
Find a computer at an electronic trash site. Find a free access point. Upload to rapid share or similar and post the link on a news feed page. Or do this on a torrent site until there are enough seeds. Voila. You have contributed to illuminate the masses who would not get the opportunity otherwise. Throw the computer in trash when finished. Use rubber gloves consistently. Nylon pantyhose over your head so there are no DNA evidence left behind. Also leave your phone at home during the operation. Never tell anyone what you just did. There are some logical arguments on both sides of this debate but I don't give enough shits to get into those. Instead, here are a few fun examples of patents that seem incredibly legitimate and so important for western society!:

  • There's Amazon's One Click patent, which is a patent on clicking once to purchase something instead of twice. They used it to sue Barnes & Noble at the dawn of e-commerce.
  • There was a company called Cendant that asserted Amazon had violated patent monopoly on recommending books to customers.
  • There was an attempt by Dustin Stamper, who was President Bush's top economist, to get a patent on a system and method for a multistate tax analysis.
  • Apple has filed a patent application for digital karaoke.
  • Facebook was sued by someone who had a patent on a "system for creating a community of users with common interests to interact in."
  • There was an absurdly broad patent issued to a company called Blackboard for the common use of technology that is employed in education and in online encyclopedias.
  • Carfax has a patent on "a method for perusing selected vehicles having a clean title history."
  • And then there is the fun patent covering swinging on the swing sideways [laughter]. That's a method patent.

Note that the fact he makes his living coding influences his position. I think if anything it comes from Si and Fe.

Will continue to pirate so long as it's essentially consequence free and I don't give a shit if it hurts the profit of some corporation or individuals. It's every man for his pocket.

I agree with what your saying, but is there a middle ground? Perhaps the
"intersubjective" realm between objective/subjective... I also thought Architect would be reasoning from Ti since he is supposedly Ti dominant?

Schema therapy.

What's your insight?

He's inundated this forum for so long with his spell-casting (brainwashing) that he has literally become the basis and core schema for what a mature and integrated INTP is, with repeated iterations, incantations, and frankly hostile dismissal of any contradictory opinions. His adamant and relentless flood of information pertaining to his supremely successful life as an INTP, and gratuitous attribution of his success to his INTP essence, has overwhelmed the vast majority of the group's ability to see it any other way. In reality, this individual is entirely close-minded, conservative, dogmatic, and self-referential. The fact that most people can't see past this delusion and that it has been allowed to persist for this long is utterly mind-boggling.

But seriously

I'm not sure either :)
You should not care what I say!

The topic deviated toward the morality of accessing pirated information and I just made the smallest remark that it resembles the old Te/Ti battle, because it does. Because I personally find that it's insufficient to decry a certain deed simply because it's illegal when there is more thought-provoking content to be found in a philosophical discussion of why it's illegal :cat:

^Most of that is on point but I still think he's not a Te type. His appeals to own authority and popularity are pretty textbook Fe.

That said this isn't a thread about him.

Miss Spelt whatever is your preoccupation with architect's authority, your exposing of his faults should be done at a rational basis, without straying from topic, that is by deconstruction or dismissal of what he represents.

Any and all criticisms of type, beyond inconsequential remarks, should be better held at threads either pertaining or oriented towards such matters. Witch hunt thread or a number of other threads in the typology, arena and fun sections that were designed for this.

You've basically derailed a thread using a typological basis and a few pictures.
Posting pictures too should be used with moderation.

Access to ip, especially free access is a rarity. Current system doesn't allow access to everyone to their satisfaction.

You take a perspective of a needy content producer as well as that of a satisfied consumer, whereas many demographic groups are able to either agree to freely distribute their work, or require intellectual property that's far too inaccessible and thus hinders their growth.

Successful torrents allow trends and ideas to spread, I wouldn't go as far as saying it helps pirated products, but it indirectly empowers the market share.

If a consumption of stolen anime increases to 5% of all torrents, this means that the whole market share of legal and illegal consumers grows. Those interested in the trend will eventually spend their money on what they need (faster, in better quality, with extra content). There's no clear divide between a thief and dedicated spender, one isn't exclusively itself.

People spending hours watching anime will spend less time and money watching films or playing games, they become anime geeks not esport geeks, etc. It's still a competition of quality trends.

Current legislation hinders and often limits healthy or reasonable adoption of trends, knowledge and content, it's geared towards the industry, their taxpayer.

Yeah well I thought I apologized but I guess it wasn't good enough to leave it alone.

tell u what I'll stop posting for a bit and you can say your things and I'll read them and not antagonize anyone,

Funny thing is that with so many members (including ex-moderators) who complain about "the state of the forum" and derails, they still haven't arrived at the right solution to optimize. They just try the same things over and over. Blind to the real problem and instead re-affirm themselves that they already know the problems and the solutions :cat:

I agree with architect that pirating is destructive to our system.

I think that the benefits of free software should be obtained trough GNU licensing where the system has evolved in constructive and sustainable way while still promoting healthy competition and advancements.

If software/movies didn't need people to pay for them to survive then they would be obtainable trough a GNU license while software that does need payment in order to survive should be protected from pirating.

The ownership of academics and technical/scientific knowledge is a problem but theft is not a solution. The solution is to encourage and financially support community(non-profit) efforts in scientific and academic advancements.

Patents is an interesting topic in relation to this but I suppose it might be a tangent. I feel patents are needed but then there obvious misuses of patents that really benefit the dishonest business men at the expense of everyone else.

The discussions of the concept of IP and of type are irrelevant here, my position is from historical socioeconomics. It came from my investigations of why things are so good? Why is it I can go to a dentist and get care so good that I feel almost nothing and have a tooth indistinguishable from the original? In a conversation with my Eastern bloc (Communist) born INTP friend it's a different story. His mother died due to the socialized medicine system. Both sides have the same technology, why the difference in care? After long analysis (and a practical minor in historical economics) I found it started with property rights of which IP rights are an extension.

Will continue to pirate so long as it's essentially consequence free and I don't give a shit if it hurts the profit of some corporation or individuals. It's every man for his pocket.

Do you like to stab yourself in the eye too? That's what you're doing. Fallacy of composition, what's right for you isn't right as a collective. Imagine a society where everybody pirates, what's the incentive to create? To come up with something really new? There is none, every fuckwit like you will just copy it so why bother. Yeah this is what you get in communist countries which have little property rights, and this is why they are the most uncreative societies on earth.

On a personal level I see this first hand. At work we have competetors in China. Fuck, the government has a company which does nothing but make carbon copies of our designs. They have no idea how these complicated machines work, but they copy them bit for bit, including the mistakes and errors. They break into our firmware and copy it directly to run on their box. What do they get for their trouble? Cheap shitty copies, and we still crush them because people buy the originals because we're still innovating and releasing new features all the time.
Go ahead, steal everything, steal books, steal music, steal software, invite your friends to do it too. Hurting corporations? Hurting individuals? Hurting artists, programmers, inventors? Fuck them! Because you deserve to be a freeloader.

Here's a question to ask yourself. Of those of you who have stolen something - let's focus on IP - music, software, a book, have you ever created something somebody else would be willing to pay for? Will you ever create anything worthwhile? I'm not talking about the science project you did in the seventh grade, but something that was hard, because others are trying to do the same thing and because audiences are so demanding, but you overcame all those difficulties and created something that people said "wow, I want that?"

So much anger. I don't care about your indignation. Communist countries the least creative? Oh boy. No other incentive to create but financial? I guess all those people releasing their work under CC just don't value it very much, eh?

C'mon man. I could buy this tirade if you were a starving coder, but not from somebody living a comfortable middle class lifestyle.

Exactly, so what's the problem with material being distributed freely? The market decides your guys' stuff is better so they are willing will to pay for a proprietary version. Your designs is more than the code but the service you provide. Now these competitors need to step up their game and realize copying wont cut it, while you profit. Free markets 101. Why use force(statutory IP) to set limitations with what people do with their works? Isn't that what socialist regimes do?

:cat:

I'm just a cat. :cat::cat: with red shoes :cat:

Ha.
I was thinking the exact same thing, almost verbatim..
Cept for the cats in red shoes...

Back on topic: I'm pro pirating all day any day. In terms of musical artists who have my fandom, I buy their albums, as a contribution to enable them to grow, and then pirate what I want as I want, within my own moral code.

I have to pirate books frequently, including but not limited to them being out of print and/or to expensive to purchase... Or sometimes just for convieniences sake, hast of time and so on and so forth.

Rights are obtained through 'might', and unfortunately (for some) the 'might' is spread round everyone in regards to software and digital file sharing. They are not platforms which can be easily controlled.. and you cannot legislate morality.

Music's just sound waves and words are just pixels.
(back to Miss Spelts thoughts on 'ideas').
What can ya do about it, besides going all Hitlerly?

Money makes this world go round, but this world's sick and we know it.

You're totally right because:

1. The only incentive for people to ever create anything others might want is money and money alone.

and

2. If a few people pirate then that is totally the same thing and indistinguishable from a world where everyone pirates.

Yeah this is what you get in communist countries which have little property rights, and this is why they are the most uncreative societies on earth.

Catch-22 if you don't you end up behind those that do, but if everyone does it's not beneficial.

People will do what is optimal for them, if it reaches the stage everyone pirates so the quality is low people will pay for quality.

Is it stealing? I don't care either way, if I wouldn't pay for it anyway I'm not detracting or adding in anyway apart from publicity when I tell people how great it is. Fame is a resource.

Why should morals stop us from living in an optimal manner in the present time. (Note: Murder effects other people and in turn effects you, these kind of morals exist for a reason) The long term effects of me as one person does not matter. What would be ideal then is to convince other people to not pirate and pirate yourself.

We should now all join architect and convince others to not pirate so we can pirate and use the current situation optimally.

Guys! Pirating is bad because we will harm the economic ecosystem! You should all stop.

I have qualms about torrenting. It really depends on the content. If there's a show I really like, I'd purchase it on my own, if not, I try a little bit of it. I think morally there's a line between downloading something like, AutoCAD and downloading something like Nirvana's 1991 Nevermind, I think. There are also cultural barriers which are broken through the use of torrenting too. A lot of Korean soap operas and Japanese animations are shared through these, promoting particular cultures. But legally speaking people are breaking the law here, so yeah. It's really up to them. Should be careful though, since your ISP can throttle your connection if they find out if you're torrenting. If someone notifies the police of your activities they are legally obligated to prosecute you.

10/10. You've convinced me. Everyone here needs to stop torrenting immediately. It's a gateway to your children taking drugs and worshiping satan, and you wouldn't want them doing that would you?

But yeah, this is essentially how I feel about it. If I torrent something I probably wasn't going to pay for it in the first place.

I just want to say that because of STEAM I'm able to get games at more reasonable prices and I've now for some years stopped pirating games completely. So for me, torrenting has always been about not being willing to pay a premium on entertainment or books.

Textbooks are the worst and the universities and publishers monopolize and jack up the prices intentionally. No, I never gave two shits about finding a pdf book online when I was already borrowing money for college and they wanted $200+ for a textbook I'd rarely have to use; screw 'em.

And music - unless it's an indie artist, they usually make plenty of $$$ playing live and getting views off their youtube music videos and whatever else they do for insane amounts of cash. I'll pay Indie Artists, but that's because they actually need money to keep doing what they are doing.

There are some youtube channels I've donated to because they need the money in order to spend the time creating their show (there's a fallout one for example). So I don't mind paying for something like that.

...
C'mon man. I could buy this tirade if you were a starving coder, but not from somebody living a comfortable middle class lifestyle.
