What kind of apocalypse would you desire?
How would you plan on living in the new world?
If only a handful of people were left and you were one of them, would you end up becoming intensely depressed and in the end miserable?
How would you act different?

Zombie apocalypse, I would sort of do what will smith does in I am legend, but I wouldnt stay in one place. I think if I could do anything I wanted I wouldnt worry about other people, would certainly search tho bc being alone gets boring sometimes. My chances of successfully courting would be pretty high if im the only guy in a thousand miles. I would have enough projects to spend years building/completing. I would definitely build a racecar, solar charging system for my porntablet phone. other cool stuffs, would need a doge for sure, or tame some wild animal.

The possibilities of transportation would be endless. Expensive cars, boats, horses. But then also people would be scrambling to reproduce so that could get awkward.

I wonder what would actually happen if 99% of people died off to some plague, the infrastructure we rely on is designed to serve a much larger population so there would be a lot of excess capacity but also a shortage of people to do maintenance. I think a lot of it would have to be abandoned and communities will form around power plants that don't require fuel, i.e. geothermal, solar and hydro.

A hydroelectric dam is almost ideal, you have a practically endless power supply (for a community of less than a hundred thousand people) which will make water purification easy (obviously there's no shortage of water) and you can get food by either fishing from the dam or cultivating the land around it, ideally downstream of the dam so you don't contaminate your water supply with you fertilizer (i.e. human waste).

I think we can all agree there is already a zombie apocalypse going on.

Complete annihilation of our species. Each of us genetically engineer ourselves to our personal preferences until we no longer have anything in common, and are no longer human. Then we start hemorrhaging solitarily into the universe on advanced spaceships - made possible by our eugenically enhanced intelligence. We've become gods made in our own image. What a badass, poetic way to go.

I even think we have a pretty good chance of this happening over the next few millennia, unless we find another apocalypse first. :fingers-crossed:

@Cognisant I love the pragmatism with which you explore these imaginative ideas. I read a theory once that the black death left a Europe formerly at the brink of starvation with an excess of resources, which could have been a catalyst for the Renaissance.

What I'm hearing is that we should make a bunker and engineer our own apocalypse.

I am 100% down for this.

Shhh, send me a homing pigeon, Big Tech is listening! They're already working on their own apocalypse, and won't have any competitors. Cease and desist.

If I want it, is it actually an apocalypse? If the world was a simulation and there was only a handful of pre-rendered apocalypses I had to choose from it would be nuclear warfare. The earth would regrow and humans population would be reduced to a ridiculously low population. The world as we know it is far too complex for us to manage, every knowledge we apply is applied in a mono-therapeutic way: We find something that works and reuse that until we realise the folly of our thought. Coal produces energy, let's use that. Oh wait, now look at how we fucked up the planet with atmospheric carbon, where only 0.0001% of all carbon should exist, which is slowly transferred into carbon deposits in the sea, which combined with calcium forms calcium carbonate (limestone) over a process of millions of years.

Everyone's dying? Fuck, give them anti-biotics. Consume first ask questions later, now viruses are evolving to anti-biotics through resistance and becoming ever more dangerous. There's just too much people, consuming too much resources that we're becoming such a strain on the world at large we can't manage ourselves. The natural system is a lot more consistent and complete if you accept it. There is no natural order, we've only been in civilizations for at least 7,000 years, the scientific revolution 500, the industrial revolution 200 years ago. We cannot hope to manage the multi-varied impacts of our decisions in such a small time frame, gradual evolution of natural systems has happened since life first set foot here.

If there was a reduced population we could still learn until we could effectively control and consider all the systems in nature as we'd have little effect on it. Right now we're substituting one mistake for 50 others and it's grown exponentially. I'll call it the ecological singularity.

The Christian Apocolypse is one where I myself have experienced visions and fulfillment of prophecy. I can only imagine what John saw on his island, the full vision. But I am a part of it so it is real. There is a verse that says what can be taken away but cannot be added unless you want plagues added to you. So not everything in the book will happen. Only what the one prophesied to come wants to happen will happen by the act of will and allowance. Act of God and the prophesized one.

back to a more natural existence where the purpose of life is to survive and replicate, plus throw in some zombies to make it even more exciting – sounds pretty sweet to me.

I would like primitivism, but I wouldn't be first generation. Moving from a world I'm so familiar with filled with technology and information to one that's prehistoric. That's quite the leap. Born into a primitive lifestyle yes, switching from a technological life to a primitive one, no.

Who needs zombies when you're still on the look out for predators? They'll fill in the thrill of surviving on necessities.

Still, the natural ability of humans to adapt is unmistakable. Sometimes I question how technology has spiked in the last 25 years and before that it was pretty much the same. Not much new technology. Men on horses. Why has it taken us so long to get where we're at and then BOOM, technology overload.

We've always utilised technology, technology is any tools that have extended our abilities beyond our biological limitations. It's just in the last 25 years it has become increasingly complex with the use of digital computers which can do linguistic processes thats main function is through physical forces, like gravity and leverage. Our evolution today is pivoted around recording of language which passes knowledge down beyond the immediate generation, with greater accuracy than that of fables and adages. The memes aren't important when compared to writtern language, with written language we've been able to develop ideas beyond the lifespan of 1-2 generations, instead this information can be passed down 7,000 years, best example is cuneiform tablets, they don't contain any fables but you'll see that Ahmid owned some lad in ancient sumaria 7,000 years ago, so don't try and claim it for your own buddy!

just as a sidenote, by definition an apocalypse implies that ALL humans die. Not great for us. What you guys are talking about is an almost-apocalypse of sorts. sorry about being a pedant.

I wouldn't mind too much if it were a fallout from a plague or something.

seeing how dependant humans currently are on other humans, if most of the general population was to die, the few survivors would be hard pressed to make things work.

Well it would be an interesting way to go out at the very least.

I've done farming and it's boring as fuck. Getting food is boring and I don't want to spend 70% of my time doing that. Add being forced into a group of 20 people I'd dislike and argue about how to do things well and efficiently. Imagine the worst work place you've been in and imagine them being your only survivors in an apocalypse. Add being cold and hungry all the time.

I'd rather play videa and chill in my heated house.

It’d be cool if there was an alien invasion. I mean, we’d be able to figure out a few secrets of life, maybe make some advancements in medicine and technology. Sure, a few people might die, but if the aliens are smart, they will probably want to talk to some of us humans to figure out what is going on with our strange blue planet. Once we figure out how to communicate with the aliens, think of everything you could know. Unless you die first. That’s the main issue with an alien invasion.

Y'all still stoked for the apocalypse?

Realistically the only way to win is not to play, regardless of pretty much any apocalyptic scenario. Calculate the moment it stops being worth it and then raid a dentist for nitrous oxide.

I have about three genuine night time dream visions of what we may be in for

1) very similar to the movie annihilation: the code of reality breaks down, boundaries are melting, everything explodes in energetic phenomena and transmutes, even gravity goes nuts. poor survival chances but you may transmorph into another being and you may orgasm ad infintum.

2) just the flood please. asteroids and tidal waves. we had that one before, about 20 K ago, afaik. its kinda similar to 1) but this time the waves are just matter, exteriority, whereas in 1) the waves are made from intra-physical interiority, the laws of physics underneath matter become wobbly. the fun part about it is the dying part.

3) humans die from virus outbreak, slowly, while A.I. robots are used to police the chaos of looting and the escaping / transgressing of populations from high viral load zones to safer zones - finally not much humans are left, mainly countless A.I robots who self replicate like an immune system would and they hunt down the last infected humans, because those keep violating some old laws / boundaries from a world that doesn't exist any more. the fun part of it is when you can say: there, i told you so.

obviously not really something i would like to experience.

the simple formula of life quality is this:

intelligence is a bell curve. the highest living standard at any time is largely thanks to the 5 percent of most intelligent people. they establish a standard of civilization via a teamwork, because humans work in a teamwork of cognitive typology based specialization and in addition to typology, authetntic individuation/specialzation is most relevant for authentic creativity to even be possible, so in order for ideal task forces to come together, you need huge numbers of smart people who are relatively mobile in lifestyle. and therefore, to get a huge, global team of high IQ experts in all fields of technology or social science, you need to put up with a tremendously more huge (up to 95%) population of idiot clowns such as myself, who live from basic income and have dreams about apocalypse, while robots do the work.
