I'm usually a pain to watch drama series with since I'm usually criticizing the plot or the actors while the others are bawling their tears out.

However, I am quite moved by war movies and stories especially cavalry charges like the Charge of the Light Brigade and last stands. I'm also moved when I visited Correigdor where soldiers died in a vain attempt to protect a naval defense fortress against aerial bombardment from a force almost seven times their size. My friends told me the place was creepy.

I kind of want to be there and fight for war and glory.

Any idea why? Perhaps I'm a closet Khornate.

I think realistically it would be more healthy to get into paintballing or video games. I don't believe anyone truly wishes to see bodies torn apart by bullets, brains and guts splattered across the ground, or squad mates you've come to know and rely on die in front of you.

Don't worry I have an (un)healthy diet of video games courtesy of my DOTA friends.

Perhaps it's just male wishful thinking or violence catharisis. Do you get days when you want to punch something just to blow off some steam? (Perhaps I need to enroll in a martial arts class again)

Perhaps I envy them since their jobs are more dramatic and the "Bad guy" is more clear cut. I know my job/goals matter but it will be YEARS before any of our team's plans actually affect the public in a meaningful way. Sometimes you don't even know who the bad guy really is.

Are you sure it's not the high efficiency and use of tactical advantage(s)? I produce a creepy smile every time I encounter intelligent play. If you can use your enemy's weaponry against him, I might even want to hug you or feel slightly sad if/when you die.

It's part of it. I enjoy it when one of the sides (both in gameplay and historical battles) is simply a Magnificent Bastard.

Oh I like to do that very much :) I use Engineer rush in Red Alert 2 and watch as my enemy's base quickly become my new forward base of operations. I tend to use Shadow Demon when the other side is fielding a squishy carry like Drow Ranger, it's kind of fulfilling to see them fight two beefed-up duplicates.

There is an odd charm to the idea of fighting a heroic last stand. Maybe there's a feeling you can take some pride in your last moments, knowing you're going to die but making an enemy work (and die) for it. That's assuming you stand and fight and not cower and shit your pants. Beats other forms of death I suppose.

Still it's best to avoid such situations.

Perhaps that's it. A good fight and dying while you're still on your feet.

Still it's best to avoid such situations.

I'll keep that in mind :D

I'm not sure of that, I can't relate at least since nothing has made me that frustrated recently.

I'm aware of stress management through physical activity though.

I think it's definitely the drama. Evoking strong emotions of courage, loyalty and rage. There is a possibility it's related to the evolutionary history of war and the psychological state needed to engage it. Military cadences are stimulating for me as well, for the same reason I believe.

These were on BF3, a mil-shooter which had those moments of inspiration.

I guess I'm not that immune to drama after all :D Perhaps it's partially the counterpart to the tearjerker movies that girls like to watch.

By the way, these Marine Cadences sound awesome to use as part of my morning exercises!

I think the drama in war movies just feels more legitimate, like you might actually feel and act in similar ways under that type of stress. Combined with the excitement you can get from action movies, and its easy to get into a war movie. I have no experience with war and no desire to experience it, but I still prefer war movies over a lot of other types of drama or action movies.

There -is- something tremendous about being part of a mass effort, overcoming obstacles, and achieving a goal. And the effort resonates even if unsuccessful. I think I know what you’re talking about. It is out there, and it does happen - but almost never for the people who seek it, I think. I believe the opportunities for it happen randomly and without warning, except in the moments its a generational thing. (Aka national wars.)

I’m sure police, firefighters, and others experience it, as well.

Another aspect of what intrigues you may be the personal power that is intrinsic to the fighting. Like many, going through bootcamp was the first really prolonged physical experiences of my life. I realized it was something I should have incorporated long before. For one thing, if you’re testing the limits of your body, you’ll be completely engaged. Absolutely mindful of the present, if you want to use buddhist phrasing. It’s a very good experience. Taking it to a higher level by being in opposition to someone else would only make it more intense.

There’s also something simply sexy about the people capable of meeting and doing those things. People who have that kind of prowess. Sexy to others, sexy to yourself.

* * * * *

P.S. It was the Navy’s bootcamp, by the by, so kind of middling compared to what you’re probably imagining. But, even there the experience was available and valid.

^ I think what hit me the most in your post is being mindful. I always crave that feeling of going all out and with all senses on high alert.I think I get that feeling most of the time when sparring with someone more experienced than I am. Most of my working life nowadays is a bit sedentary and I can simply provide around 50% mental capacity to get things done.

PS: Hey being in the Navy is awesome. Be proud of it :)
