I need some advice. I am an artist im currently in a visual arts academy. I find it really hard to come up with things to draw. I mainly draw random people ( no one in particular) just messing with facial expressions and composition, but i want to do more. When it comes to art theory and whatnot i am really good i can see the meaning in any piece of art. For showcases we have ill just rip something out of my sketch book fix it up and B.S the meaning and i still get good grades and accolades for it (mainly for the meaning). I want to be a better artist. How can i develop a wider rang of subject matters and what do you guys do to brainstorm ideas?

The subject matter should not be the point of the drawing, in my opinion. The way it is drawn- the composition of visual elements and how they interact is very important. I think you can pick almost any subject at all and do a beautiful painting of it. I have this problem too of obsessing over what and not how.

Yeah, meaning is lame. Draw whatever you want. If you don't know what you want, draw anything and continue drawing things that you find you like to draw.
