I actually just saw this movie for the first time recently, and it instantly became one of my favorites.

I guess what hooked me the most was the visual ambiance. Lots of pretty scenes and eye-candy in regards to the hotel, places, and the city. I'm always a sucker for this type of thing and this particular type of ambiance tends to put me in a trance-like state. Hotel decor is a major 'trigger' for me personally.

Also I liked the 'quietness' of the scenes. The minimalist approach to dialogue and plot events was unique and refreshing. Sometimes simpler is better. The premise of people being placed in unfamiliar environments and trying to adapt is interesting also but this was just icing on the cake.

I was laying in bed at night when I watched this and it put me in the perfect state for sleep. It was calming and interesting at the same time.

I'd like some recommendations on similar movies, especially with the visual aspect as mentioned. But any strong similarities in other aspects are welcome.

Maybe Somewhere by Sofia Coppola. It fits perfectly with your minimalistic wants I think.

midnight in paris maybe has some tangents to that. maybe one tangent is all one gets. if so, i mean a tangent

you could try googling things like "gone in conversion" or "vanished in decryption" although it would be a waste of time since the semantic surface characteristics of titles likely provide insufficient indication about the aspects relevant to your query.

The man who sleeps is a powerful film and totally beyond the league of lost in translation. A modest yet thunderous ode to the epiphany of the fragile and contingent nature of existence. A lot of it will stick with you for years to come, i can remember some parts of the (second-person) narrative monologue word for word. Very recommended(book as well)
