I don't know if I should be posting this here, or on another topic. But my doubts start from my school.

Despite constantly taking the test and trying to be as truthful as I could be. I am an INTP. I see freakishly similar negative traits described of this personality type. What does profound me is that INTP is the intellectual type. I sucked at school. Big time. In fact, in middle school and high school they had me in 'Special Skills'(due to lack of organization). They were most likely alerted when I failed math and science in 7th grade.

In High School, not much better. I ended up failing Zoology, in defense, I hated the teacher. Ended up in the lowest level of Math. Got a D in physics. Spent all my lunch, milk breaks, and after school playing basketball which I sucked at. Until the very last year, when Varsity season ended (the coach picked me in pity). In the end I graduated with a GPA of 2.3 . I even didn't plan for college and I am in a supposedly in a gap year working in my dad's office.

No initiatives as of yet, I love this compared to school. Even though once again I suck at it too.

Getting worried that I need to get a degree. Considered Business and Computer Science as majors.

And believe me, I do study. Or try, and pathetically give up and get Ds and Fs. I even sucked so bad in Spanish that my teacher literally chased me around to make sure I wouldn't fuck up my final project.

Is this really an INTP academic record? Willing to take all and any criticism.

INTP like theories but I figure many of us didn't do well in school for lack of being and SJ.

It really depends on what your problem is when you're studying. Do you have trouble focusing or retaining the information? Do you do fine when explorer an academic subject on your own? High school is really suited for SJ types anyhow so don't sweat it too much. If you can pull a good score on the ACT/SAT you can get into college. Otherwise, start at an open enrollment community college and then transfer into a university.

I failed much of middle school until I got my act together and ended up graduated valedictorian in high school. I make a lot of effort to be organized with my school work or else entropy wreaks havoc.

If you need motivation, get an entry level job outside of your dad's office. That will show you what life is like for most unskilled labor.

Maybe I should share my failures as well....

How do you find "working"? Is it something you hate? Or are you neutral with it? What I mean is...Do you work hard?

I think everyone has enough potential. What creates the division is Working hard vs. Interests---not ignoring the factor of talent of course.

I think its a necessary, healthy but revolving action.

phoa09 I don't see that INTPs have to be intellectual. They just like thinking and are comfortable with that. Might as well use that an an asset. I don't see INTPs as having any more negative traits than any other types of personalities -- just different.

Try this link for a description:

and longer:

I would take these writings as guidelines. One doesn't have to adhere rigidly to these traits in all ways.

I believe I am an INTP though I haven't taken any good test lately. Was it easy to get yours?

i think a person can be intellectual without necessarily being academic.
just like a person can be academic without being intellectual.

intelligence is measured in a multitude of ways. the school system has a clear bias.

i wouldn't sweat it too much.

(and anyway, being INTP isn't about your grades, it's about your thought process.)

I'm not different from what you described really. I never have done amazing well in school, and high school (so far) is just a complete mess. I'm trying to just pass my classes, let alone get good grades.

It could be an INTP thing since were known for being unorganized and we lack in focusing on one specific thing that doesn't interest us.

Well just talking of life of an unskilled labor is enough to motivate me. :p

Is it still reasonable to go into college after being so disengaged with studying and school work? Should I really try to get into a good university?

Because I can get through without going to an expensive good one as there's already a job which I dont get paid for but live off of. With future prospects of being more involved.

I never see going into a university because everyone else is as a reason. I am just wondering if it really helps. Is it helpful? judging from my attitude and personality?

thats what i last scored. I went to a forum.. "you are an intp if you...' and yeah i see a lot of common ground from there.. though sometimes I am a little ISTP, as I like driving fast and do a lot of dangerous things for the fun of it. But i never pay attention to details, a main reason of bad English tests.

But holy, valedictorian... thats definetly sumtin sumthin.

I just work hard enough to get through.. Its always inconsistent. Sometimes I work really hard even if its boring to death. Sometimes I am just browsing and piss off my family. One thing that is consistent though is... I try to give it a shot. Even after work hours.

I think it's really helpful to go back to school. I actually dropped/flunked out at one point and while working a job I really hated (in a hotel, go figure) I really wanted to go back to school. I was out of school for a year and half but going back wasn't that difficult especially when your starting in lower level classes.

I remember reading an article about a study that it isn't getting into a good school that determines one success after college but an individuals motivation.

No, some people who go to a university don't have a reason other than it's the thing to do after high school. If you don't have a specific career in mind, find a field of study that you'll never tire of.

Personality and attitude are hard to discern for me over the internet sometimes. Honestly, its doable but you have to want it. You also have to practice some of those J skills... of find a mate to do it for you. I hate organization, but I put up a large white board next to my desk that has all my class information, dates of upcoming exams, and check boxes so I can keep track if I've done weekly assignments yet. I hate the thing but I forget things so easily that it has greatly improved my grades. Also, uninstallig the stubleupon buton has greatly improved my productivity.....anywho

Yeah, so you should figure out a general direction you want to go in life. Having a degree doesn' make you smarter but it serves as a inda badge for employers to show that you are learned in whatever field of study. Then if you decide to go, make adaptations so that you can exceed because college is expensive and it sucks having to pay for something and not be able to use it.

I had mediocre grades in school. Some subjects were interesting, but not enough to inspire me to study particularly hard.

It wasn't until a couple of years after I hit the workforce that I found something that said to me "You would be AWESOME at this and you would LOVE it." And it took a further decade of drifting from job to job to be able to spot the recurring trends in things I both was good at and liked doing, and turn that into a career.

Well, my academics is a complete failure as well. All my life I've been failing mathematics. In fact, I have a brilliant record of failing every single test and exam I had for all my years in school. Straight. I only managed to pass in the final examinations and that was the only thing that saved me. My sciences? Well, they're dying. Utterly.

The latest examination I had, my scores barely qualified me for the next stage of my schooling. Like, a one mark difference. So trust me, you're not the only one.

Failing in school isn't all that unheard of amongst the INTP type. Lack of focus, and lack of effort in areas you aren't interested, along with easily getting bored by repetition... can be a minefield for your academic pursuits. They can be overcome, but not without Herculean effort.

As far as college goes, I'll tell you this: school (any kind) should be considered merely a tool. It's not the goal. Plenty of people have successful lives that never went to a college. Don't ever stop desiring to learn. Can you understand this?

Once you determine where you want to BE, then you can determine what tools you need to get there.

I support this. And I think it makes sense, at least it does to me.

But in the end, what's it matter wether you're really an INTP or not..?

I just want to say great first post, especially the bolded part. I've been thinking about this lately, and I do think I saw getting into a good college as "Whew, I made it, now I can relax a little bit." I think that paragraph alone is going to help motivate me in school next year. The tool instead of a goal part couldn't be more true.
