A few hours ago after a sudden decision to do a back-up, which eventuated, I attempted to upgrade from PHP 7.4 to 8; the site went blank. I reverted to 7.4 and the site offered a gobbledygook MySQL error warning only.
Fully expecting to have to send in a ticket to Homepage [ the now owners of URLJet ] spending a day or two, I desperately tried phpmyadmin, running analyze, then repair --- neither of which were accepted --- then optimize, which seems to have worked more by luck than skill.
Not only are websites getting heavier all the time, more due to unchained javascript than images, the usual culprit blamed by poor old Google in the old days, ( particularly wretched sites are the poorly writ Quora, Pinterest, and the newly hideous IMDB which all can tie up a browser for minutes whereas a plain old pure html site created 20 years ago still comes up immediately ) but due to over-reaching devs, website structure is unbearably complex...
I was lucky this time.
A better place...
