Types: Deductive or Inductive?

This is something that really bugs me. I keep looking for clarity in the concepts of the cognitive functions. I think when they started with Jung, they were more or less deductive. And as such it was easier understand them and their foundations.

But now, we've hit the point where the 16 types have become solidified. And the functions have now taken on a sort of sloppy inductive character to them. If someone has an idea that's vaguely or convolutedly related to the self, this is called Ni. Or if someone orders some thing logically that's somehow related to the world, it's called Te. And everyone talks as if they have a clear and distinct idea of these 8 functions. I don't see it at all. It seems like a complete mess to me.

I wouldn't call it a mess, but I think you are correct that we haven't developed the functions clearly enough. Why don't you contribute to the collective MBTI initiative?
