He wasn't exactly thrilled with knowledge though was he?

Just anti-social and grumpy, perceptive and cynical....

Hmmm.... actually he was always reading and saying...."It says here...."

My vote is still "the architect" in the Matrix movie series (I think it was the "Matrix reloaded" movie). By now everyone has probably seen the Yutube video about this.

what is it about
A professor that denounces chess as a mere child's game that is easily won with the correct use of logic. He claims to be capable of defeating any chess expert after two hours of learning the game's rule through his logical abilities. A game between him (first-time player) and a Russian champion is arranged. The outcome will decide the validty of his theory and thoughts.

It is very short. The time required to read it should only be 5 - 15 minutes.

I think that Edgar wrote an essay regarding chess, which would indicate that he's knowledgeable of its rules/history and therefore a player. Very few people would be interested in chess a lot and not play it. I do not think that he was paid to write the paper (writers occasionally paid to write an essay on a topic that they do not necessarily find interesting) or guided with it.
