My school administered the WAIS IV recently and i just got the report back.

Perceptual Reason 111 77th percentile
Verbal Comprehension 123 93rd percentile
Working Memory 142 99.something percentile

For those of you with knowledge of psychometrics what do these numbers mean to you?
What is a strong working memory indicate of?
What would a good job/college major be for someone with these abilities

A strong working memory means you have good short term memory. Percentiles can tell you where you are in relation to a sample of tested people.... it all sounds pretty self-explanatory... your processing speed is faster than 50% of the other test takers, your perceptual reasoning better than 77%, your verbal comprehension better than 93%, and your working memory better than 99%.

In other words, you have superb memory, great language skills, good reasoning, and average speed...

Doesn't the report give explanations?! What kind of a report is that......

What would be a good job/college major? You expect us to tell you that with that little info? You're out of it...

This is actually the first I've heard of this test.
Anyhow, I don't really see how this test could help you figure out what you should do in college either.

To figure that out, think about why you are going to college, and then figure out what major is it that will help you attain that goal.

If you are like many people it's mostly about getting a better job, if that's the case, figure out what majors are most likely to really help with that, and which of those is actually somewhat interesting. Or you can be like me and just go for the subject that interests you the most.

I'm willing to bet majoring in something that really interests you is very important to most INTPs, and that a big part of why they go to college is also just to broaden their knowledge of things in general.

Heres what you do: major in political science as an undergrad then attain your JD at a school like Notre Dame. You do like making money and using your brain, right? It works out because of your superlative working memory - retention of legal details - and proclivity for words - which comes in handy as someone who specializes in words.

Apropos ADD, you take some amphetamines and balance out the anxiety with yoga or meditation. Or you could go the natural route and try something like l-tyrosine or 5-htp to balance out those neurotransmitters. youre welcome.

Thanks for the posts.

kuu: I'm well aware of what all the numbers MEAN. I know verbal comprehension= verbal abilities, perceptual reasoning= performance iq, and processing speed is how quickly you do things. What I'm confused about is what abilities are associated with a strong working memory (other than remembering phone numbers) and how working memory differs from processing speed (notice 40 point discrepancy).

arcaris:
I agree its important for one to try new things and do what one is interested in (I already do that very single-mindedly). Your post did make me think about trying more things.

snafupants: Interesting career suggestion. Un-coincidentally, my mom has a PhD in political science. I was thinking about majors in statistics, history, or psychology. Your post made me think about Political science, law (but I'm a bad speaker --can't keep still),

Exercise calms me down, ergo I play tennis often.
