"All the Pretty Horses", Cormac McCarthy, also "No Country for Old Men" and "Blood Meridian" - I think of his writing as modern versions of the epic poem. I'll read anything he writes after having read those. The movies (especially all the pretty horses) don't even come close
Aha! i knew i wasnt the only McCarthy fan! Kudos to your good taste.
The earliest was probably "The Sound and the Fury" by Faulkner. I read it in HS and it made me concious of the fact that the world is mostly this grey blob.
"Fight Club" by Chuck Palahniuk. I think it really speaks to my generation, which i believe is a lost generation.
I love all of McCarthys books but "The Crossing" and "No Country for Old Men" impacted me the most. And i guess ill finish with a quote from The Crossing.
“No one can tell you what your life is goin to be, can they?
No.
It's never like what you expected.
Quijada nodded. If people knew the story of their lives how many would then elect to live them?”
