At some point everything becomes hard. History might be simple learning of facts, but when you go down that rabbit hole and really try honestly at understanding history and all the things you will find it more challenging as you go. Not just that, but imagine a historian collecting data from allkinds of sources and working to find ways to make sense of them. Thats just history the subject for the not so bright.

Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology etc. like wise. It always starts off easy, but as you go further it just seems to get harderd and harder.

yeah the really hard part of any subject is usually when you arrive at the point where you have to apply all the theory in the real world. Any subject can become easy on paper by systematically understanding all its concepts and mechanics.

One the hardest subjects I found, at least conceptually is using the standard model in particle physics to predict the output of over 100,000 different physical formulas. Instead of using constants such as speed of light, you can use the standard model of physics to predict well over 100,000 physical constants. These 32 measurements consist of wavelengths in light, the mass of a neutrino and energy emissions from photons. I find it conceptually difficult because many physical equations are giving an abstraction, such as e = mc^2 into more atomic propositions like van der waal forces, electron orbitals, centripedal and centrifugal forces and so much more (unfortunately, gravity hasn't been reduced to atomic forces yet).

It's like computers: People understand how to operate windows, but under that there's a GUI, an IDE, high level programming languages, low level programming languages, assembly code, logical cores in a processor, which process bits using binary bits of 1s and 0s, which are abstractions of electrical voltage and logical gates like AND,OR,XOR, NOR.... it's like peeling away at the abstractions that are an integral part of our reality and getting closer to the source code of the universe.

trying to define what hard is

A language's difficulty is proportional to

form/ function /structure and grammar /meaning /parts/ example

perhaps that can also apply to topics and subjects

equations are purely functional with inputs and outputs.

Computer science and human biology are probably the most technical topics I've studied.

For me, public speaking. It caused heart tachycardia like palpitations, and I couldn't physically do it.
Asked a doctor for a beta blocker so I could calm my heart enough to pass this class that had FIVE speeches required, PLUS the final exam was a speech. I freeze up in front of crowds, and feel like a thousand eyes are on me. The only way I passed was take the beta blocker 2 hours prior, and stand facing the screen that I was presenting and not look at the audience.
I had attempted public speaking in another class and couldn't get through it. I remember giving a lecture on the health benefits of Lethicin and another on how to fly fish.

Also, a few subjects in micro and macro economics were not easy, every day they covered more and more charts and effects of supply and demand. Some involved a bunch of algebra that was like 10 characters long on top and 10 long on the bottom, ie, percent changes, etc. Some tricky charts showing effects of what happens with supply and demand.

Also, I'd say Cobol was the hardest as it was pages of computer language and so easy to miss something.

And the genetics part of biology -I needed a tutor for that.

But the public speaking did help me later. I gave a decent speech to my entire division at work (30 people) on how to do something very complex, and all of the supervisors said it was very good and very clear, so I guess I got over the fear a bit. I felt like I knew the subject well and how to present it so they'd understand it and answer questions as needed.

the more examples and variations of a concept or problem, harder it is (like math or organic chem). i guess structure and parts are similar , you change a part, you kind of change the whole thing.

Exam and tests

true and false uncertainty . its hard to know what is true and false when to solve question a problem.

How to produce (calculate) a result given a set of variables or criteria
