This thread is about Touhou.
Although this is actually a game, I love it more for the phenomenon that surrounds it. The game's music has spawned a huge remixing community that spans the entire spectrum of music from classical to techno to rock to blues to metal to rap. I find it quite refreshing and fascinating to listen to the same familiar melodies I like creatively rendered in different styles and genres.
Here is an example with one of my all time favourites, Doll Judgement:
YouTube - Alice's Theme - Doll Judgment
and a metal remix from demetori:
Yes I love metal:
Orchestral:
Techno:
(I personally edited this song and uploaded it)
And that was just the tip of the iceberg. Many of the more popular songs have multiple remixes in multiple genres. I consider it a personal quest to be able to create something on the order of greatness that is Touhou.
The user content generated is not restricted to music, users who generate visual content also form a huge segment of the fanbase as evidenced from a brief perusal of danbooru and wakachan.

Much of this includes crossovers with other famous names in pop culture like 300 by Frank Miller:

Here, a cross over with Final Fantasy 11:

Incredibly well drawn, signifying the maturity of the community.
Of course, the gameplay itself is nothing to scoff at. You need a great deal of skill to be able to play the game on the easiest levels of difficulty and provides many hours of challenge and frustration to gamers who love to push the limits of skill.
