What can cause one to have slow and halting verbal articulative skills? I've become atrociously prone to this and have read a few times that this is a trait common among some ISTJs (I do not know my type, but it may be possible). The experience is akin to water going down a funnel; the words are present within my mind but I cannot bring them out as quickly or efficiently as I would like to to make my point.

I don't think it is type related, but if it is I would guess INTPs are also susceptible.

I - Words have to be brought to the surface
N - Likes saying the perfect word
T - Hesitates
P - Indecisive

It's great for printed documents, but without proper training verbal skills suffer. What I do is just let go of my restraint and unleash the first word that comes to mind. A good idea would be to associate/converse with more intellectuals such as in a debate team.

I shall try letting go of the restraint (I've noticed it tends to make people impatient and unlikely to listen to the next word(s)). I tend to converse only with intellectuals if given a choice, although not quite as intense as debate team (although I do question everything I see no sense/point behind). Please correct me if I'm wrong ( I know [--] <-- much on typology theory), but I thought that the T/F dichotomies were the judgement forming functions? Or am I missing your point?

I believe it would most likely be the result of having your external articulation function (Te or Fe) as an inferior process (last priority/most draining).

I was oversimplifying for the sake of understanding.

When I was a kid, I had a similar problem that manifested as a pretty good stutter, especially when there was an idea I really wanted to express. I found your funnel analogy very descriptive of how I felt, except with me it was more like a blockage in a high-pressure water line.

In my experience, EyeSeeCold's suggestions are good. That search for the perfect word or the perfect phrase was the main culprit for me. I had to force myself to quit thinking so damn much about what I was saying, relying much more on coloquialism and conversational formulas. In short, handing my mouth over to my Si and Fe. Years later, I still feel a little uncomfortable with this, and I feel like I'm "dumbing myself down". (Not that I've really become all that conventional, it's just to a degree that allows me to function. I haven't forced myself into another type.)
