Hello to all. I am here to meet other INTPs and possibly settle an argument I had with a friend about my personality type. She believes that because I critical of others' behaviors (bad drivers, for example), that makes me an INTJ. I have consistently tested for INTP since 2000. In fact, the P factor gets stronger with age. Beyond that, I hope to find some information on INTP learning styles and pedagogy. I have an ADHD diagnosis and while the meds help, they only do so much. Finding some helpful tidbits for life and learning to apply through my personality and learning type will be of great benefit to me and my future goals.

Cheers!

Hey, I just signed up myself.

To answer your question, the "judging" aspect in the MBTI types has nothing to do with being critical or judgmental. I think a lot of INTPs are actually really critical of other people.

That's what I tried to sell to her as well. She wasn't buying it. Because of prior HR training in MBTI, she figures herself an expert on the subject. The few INTPs I know do the same thing I do... A lot people act like they don't have a lick of common sense.

Ah yes, the studious MBTI practitioners.

In a short while you will have accumulated enough information on this topic to argue confidently. In the meantime, stay open minded to what she has to say.

I'd remind you that test results are about as dubious if not more dubious than typings that are executed by practitioners, so the fact that you 'test as INTP' is about equally valid as the fact that your friend who is familiar with the theory would type you as INTJ: almost nil.

Unless your friend is willing to explain to you WHY you are most likely a dominant intuitive type with auxiliary thinking and not a thinking type.

;) Here is something you can do for a laugh:

NT temperaments are collectively known in one system (Kiersey) as "rationals" however types that are dominant perception types such as INTJs are also known in another system (Jung) as "irrationals"

('rationals' in this system are dominant judging types such as the INTP or ISFP or ENFJ).

The temperament system of Kiersey will most likely be the one your friend thinks of when you use the terminology "rational".

It would be humorous to see your friend argue that as an INTJ you are a rational type not an irrational type because for the most part she would be absolutely wrong. Then you could discredit her completely as having a shallow/surface grasp on the basic meaning of MBTI dichotomies while revealing a total absence of background information on why this theory has developed or areas for further study.

Perhaps she will surprise you by being right. Perhaps you will surprise her by enabling her to put her foot-in-mouth.

It's nice to have friends, but hold them at some distance if they try to insist you agree that you're something or someone you don't feel that you are. Be wary if she enjoys labeling you and managing you. (Two characteristics that I believe are J characteristics.). If that's the case, you can remain friends, but don't allow yourself to be ruled.

I think one quick way to differentiate J versus P is to review whether the person enjoys scheduling each day (commonly a J approach), versus enjoying spontaneity and often procrastinating (more characteristic of P).
