I have an endless number of questions that look like, "is ____ an INTP thing?"

So, I was wondering if a thread where you propose possible correlations you feel might exist was a good idea.

Or, you know, I could just ask a zillion questions at my pleasure and you can all respond at my whim. Whichever you prefer.

(no option C, for you anti-socratics. ;))

The first one I have in mind right now is, what kind of car do you drive, and why do you have it? And, in case you just drive whatever car was convenient for you to have, what kind of car would you like- both realistically, and ideally?

What kind of cars do INTP's pick? And what colour? I currently drive a 1985 Vanagon, blue (favorite colour, though not necessarily for cars), with a custom roof rack on top. I originally faced the middle row towards the rear, which was cool, but eventually took it out and put a lounge chair in there, and bolted it to the floor. :D

I want a motorcycle for personal use, when I don't have passengers, or need to get somewhere quickly (not much get-up-and-go in the van, heh). I am about to buy a sweet folding bicycle I've been planning on getting for 3 months, tomorrow. Anyone interested in pics?

Cars - I drive a blue audi sedan, my favorite car ever. It has a comfortable driver's seat; good sound system; corners well, and accelerates smoothly at interstate highway speeds. However, I loved my first car (red VW bug), my second car (bronze mustang), and my third car (white triumph spitfire) - hard to see a pattern there.

My ideal car (money no object) would probably be hydrogen-fueled, but otherwise pretty much the same as the blue audi.

Well, since I'm 16, I don't care too much about what the car is like just so long as it runs well and has good mileage and doesn't look ridiculous.

My dream car would probably be a charcoal Ford Mustang, though.

Hydrogen Fuel will never be a reality.
Q: How viable are hydrogen cars? Many seem to think they are the "cars of the future.”
A:
There are two types of hydrogen cars. Fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) are EVs, but instead of getting their electricity from batteries charged from the grid, they get their power from fuels cells using hydrogen as the energy carrier. FCVs use four times as much electricity on a per mile basis as a battery EV if the hydrogen is obtained through the process called electrolysis. So you would need four times the number of solar panels to go the same distance as you would in a battery EV. Hydrogen obtained through reformation of hydrocarbon fuels releases massive quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere, and even that dirty process uses more energy than merely charging a battery. FCVs have many seriously difficult and expensive engineering challenges to solve before they will ever be widely available, and even then, the energy required per mile will probably still be substantially higher than with battery EVs.
Internal combustion engines (ICE) can be made to burn hydrogen instead of gasoline. Even these fairly simple conversions are expensive, and the energy required is again, much higher per mile than with EVs. In addition, ICE burning hydrogen (H2) cars still have some emissions albeit low but they cannot be considered ZEVs, not even taking into consideration how one gets the hydrogen. --http://www.pluginamerica.org/faq.shtm

What you really want is an electric car.

I love Audis. They are some of my favorite cars.

I'm 16, so the only thing I know about cars is my ideal one; a mint condition (so it doesn't fall apart) black (with phoenix vinyl) '69 pontiac firebird. Damn, that's a nice car.

I don't have a car, but I'm saving up for one. My ideal is the Acura Integra 89, complete with a motor-bike in the back. Or, I could get the dream car, RX-7.

Well, considering I don't even have my permit yet (I get it next December...), cars don't really interest me all that much. I'm fine with walking.
My dream car would just be something sleek, classy, and black.

Since you are titling your thread "correlation/false correlation", instead on expanding on colours of cars etc (I don't own a car - don't drive - used to own a moto - now on public transport), I'll go on a maybe related subject:
I participate to other MBTI related forums as well and, lately, I have started to find there are tons of misconceptions about the whole thing. IMO, it is an INTP thing to have some basic preferences on the way you perceive the world around you and the way you process available data in order to reach to some conclusions/decisions.
It is hardly an INTP thing what your *personal* preferences are, what colours or foods you like etc, or what behaviour you usually display.

So, my opinion on possible correlations and un-correlations (based on my understanding on MBTI and my observation on people on other forums - I have yet to meet an INTP in real life to compare):

INTPs are likely to:
-Be more socially inept: IxTx characteristic, underlined by dominant Ti: they don't have very developed their F side to grasp what is expected to them in every situation, plus they are introverts.
-Be more flexible in terms of opinions: xNxP, extrovert N
-(etc, I maybe complete the list later).

Being INTP does not mean that one is:
-Unmotivated/underachiever: Being P, I and N does not mean one cannot start, follow through and complete processes. These are more likely to be personal problems of each individual
(etc.)

Ok, maybe others want to complete the lists for me, or maybe I'll do it at some point of the future. My point is that type is not a formula that applies to certain individuals and defines their preferences, choices, etc.

Of course, rail. I was just wondering if there was going to be a discernable pattern within the personal preferences- i.e., the majority of INTPs at least have a well thought out reason for liking the car they do, if they have one they like.

Though, it actually seems that INTP's pick cars not by going to consumer reports, as one might stereotypically assume, but primarily by an iNtuitive "what do I like?"

Fernando, I'm not sure if you gathered that my vehicle was a Hippie Van? '85 Vanagon. (that's not mine, but that one looks identical.)

Just thought it was funny. Unless you were being subtle, which, unfortunately, is indistinguishable from ignorance on the internet if done properly.

Some more questions
: (I'll start it off)
How many of you are interested in linguistics/foreign languages/computer languages?

I have shown mild interest in computer languages, but am very interested in foreign languages. As far as English linguistics go, I relish in an intuitive understanding, and do not bore myself with the technical know-how.

How mechanically adept are you?
I'm ok. I'm good at figuring out systems, obviously, but haven't taken the time to delve into any particular mechanical system to specialize in. Since I've gotten my VW, I've been slowly gaining knowledge of that engine/motor; I can also change brakes & oil on most cars.

On a scale of 0-10, how happy would you say you are right now? On average?
(10 being the highest).

8, but I'd say it fluctuates a great deal. Today's a good day, but by Thursday this week, who knows? More likely I'll not dramatically fluctuate or drop for at least a week and a half, but I will probably be a 7 or 6 most of the time. This is because I have a mild gnawing depression that results from me feeling like I'm not actually going anywhere right now- at least, I'm not aiming anywhere right now. Unfortunately, time has no friction.

What kind of music do you like?
Melodic music. This can be classical, folk, foreign, techno, indie, jazz, or otherwise. I don't listen to much techno lately, though I did a year or two back or more. I do not like the male vocals found in pop. My single favorite genre is probably 'indie' currently, but specifically Sufjan Steven's brand of indie; there is much in the genre to not be liked.

I also like music to have a dark feel to it. Massive Attack is a good band to show what I'm talking about by this- though, around age 14, I listened to Evanescence's album "Fallen" on repeat about a thousand times. I am especially fond of the tone of stringed instruments (hammered, bowed, otherwise manipulated, or plucked- except for the harpsichord, which I abhor), and can thoroughly enjoy electronic sounds, yet am picky. I am generally not a fan of wind instruments, and brass has its place. Reed instruments can sound very good, but do not always. I do still find myself listening to some rock; I at times am embarrassed to admit I kind of like a few of Nirvana's songs. I can very much appreciate disharmony, and grunge- so often I feel like a melody I create means nothing, and I'll just play something completely disharmonious to clear my mind, something overbearingly intense & full to wash the richness out.

I do not want to neglect that I occasionally find myself liking update, happy songs, when done well- like an occasional Sufjan Stevens song, My Brightest Diamond, or Jack Johnson song.

I digress.

How athletic would you say you are?

Rather. I generally have been growing up. I started rock climbing at 12 and do to this day, did a tiny bit of gymnastics when I was very young (I hardly remember it). I did some wrestling in High School, because I educated myself & found that it would a) get me into better shape than any other sport offered at school, b) it was highly competitive, c) was actually within the family of sports known as 'martial arts'. I also have continued to do Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, and just bought a new bike yesterday- I've already put around 7+ miles on it.

What type(s) were your parents? (If you know, obviously. If not, take a guess.)

My mom is a very pronounce ENFP, maxed out on every pair. She's very messy, outgoing, friendly, sincere, kind, sensitive, etc. She's relatively creative, and even reasonably intelligent for an ENFP woman- she works in commercial real estate & hard money lending.
I never knew my dad; parents divorced when I was younger than 2, and I have no memory.

Would you consider yourself competitive?
I was a lot more competitive when I was younger, but I am only less competitive because I find it to be unwise & an undesirable trait in most scenarios. Still, within reason, I fight to the death if it does not otherwise compromise me.

Is your room/house messy right now? (Might as well ask it here. :)

Absolutely. Very. I just did a minor clean, which involved cleaning covers (i.e., throwing them next to the washing machine- I will get around to actually cleaning them... later...), and clearing some crud out of the center walkway. I just organized the downstairs/rest of my house quite a bit, but it definitely needs a sweeping.

Do you generally prefer dark lighting or bright lighting in your room/house?

I like very dim lighting, generally. I think it is more attractive, and I have very sensitive eyes- photophobia, which is an eye condition, not an irrational fear.

Describe the most prominent thematic element present in your clothing.

It is simplistic, minimalist. I almost exclusively wear jeans, very rarely wear shorts (I own one pair, for athletic needs). I don't like gaudy designs, and I don't like brand names. I primarily wear flip flops, even in the winter, and wear super-low-cut socks with shoes that resemble cleats when I do wear closed-toe. I don't spend a lot of money on clothes, but I am not shabbily dressed.

Usually. I do occasionally walk around in PJ pants, and I don't give it a second thought. I only have one pair, though, and I get annoyed when the long ends get stepped on outside, and they aren't good when riding bicycles.

--

You may answer all of them, 1 of them, whichever ones you feel are worth answering, or half of them. You only have to answer as much as you feel is worth knowing.

You must choose one of the above, however. The more people who complete this survey, the more complete our picture will become.

Feel free to add a question you have.

Actually, I'm not familiar with that particular model, so no, I didn't make fun of your car.

How many of you are interested in linguistics/foreign languages/computer languages?

I'm most interested in the English language. I love to write, and I like to think about what exactly goes into making a perfect sentence, a perfect description of something, a perfect story. I also took 3 years of Spanish. After I knew enough spanish to get around and get what I want, it became tedious, but I've had a great fascination with being able to communicate everywhere, knowing several languages.

How mechanically adept are you?

I wouldn't know, at least when it comes to cars. I'm a 16 year old girl so I seldom end up working under the hood or elsewhere. I just know where everything is.

On a scale of 0-10, how happy would you say you are right now? On average?
(10 being the highest).

7, overall. Usually, I'm quite satisfied with myself. However, every day has its ups and downs. Sometimes I'm depressed, sometimes I'm elated.

What kind of music do you like?
My favorite genres are progressive rock, classic rock, modern rock (ala Soundgarden, Nirvana, Audioslave, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers), and metal. The things I look for in music are emotion, musical mastery, energy, great combination of dissonance and melody, and preferably great lyrics.

How athletic would you say you are?

I'm fairly athletic. I don't have the desire or the commitment to work out, but I'm fit enough to participate in any athletic activity and not get tired quickly.

What type(s) were your parents? (If you know, obviously. If not, take a guess.)

My mom's an ESTJ, and my dad's an ISTP, which is great because ISTPs and INTPs and quite similar and we relate well.

Would you consider yourself competitive?

Not really, unless I'm up against people that I respect and want to measure up to. It's not in my nature to fight to the death.

Is your room/house messy right now? (Might as well ask it here. :)

It's really clean, but only because of a few uncommon conditions:

- my family is trying to sell the house and there's constant showings and open houses that I have to keep my room clean for.

- half my stuff has been packed away

- I share my room with my sister, who cares about cleaning a lot more than I do.

Do you generally prefer dark lighting or bright lighting in your room/house?

I prefer mood lighting. Not bright, not dim, just the right kind of lighting. However, I usually need bright light for whenever I'm making art, that is, most of the time.

Describe the most prominent thematic element present in your clothing.

Casually vibrant. I really like playing around with colors and patterns in my clothing. Usually a cool screened tee with my orange hoodie, dark jeans all year round, and sneakers, usually my converses or vans.

How many of you are interested in linguistics/foreign languages/computer languages?

Fairly interested, I'm trying to learn PERL right now...

How mechanically adept are you?
I'm very good at understanding how the mechanics work, but I tend to fail in regards to actually doing things...

On a scale of 0-10, how happy would you say you are right now? On average?
(10 being the highest).

A 7. Life is good in general, but I'm in HS and HS is torture.

What kind of music do you like?
Ah, Fallen, I loved that one, still do. I like the effect they come off with moreso than the lyrics. Also, I listen to anything from New Alternative to the Classic-ish rock. I'm listening to the Pretenders right now. MY most listened to band is Barenaked Ladies...

How athletic would you say you are?
Not. I'm not fat, but I'm not strong. I do fence, however.

What type(s) were your parents? (If you know, obviously. If not, take a guess.)

Mother: INTP, though I have doubts,
Father: IXTX I'm not sure, but definitely IT.

Would you consider yourself competitive?
Yes and no, I am competetive, but I have no need to let others know about it; I'm very subtle.(Hopefully)

Is your room/house messy right now? (Might as well ask it here. :)

My room got in a tussle with a tornado, and lost. 'Nuff said.

Do you generally prefer dark lighting or bright lighting in your room/house?

Bright, but I sleep in complete blackness, or did, until I got the various computer components with lights n them in my room...

Describe the most prominent thematic element present in your clothing.

Utilitarian, although a vast majority of my T-Shirts have some sort of nerd reference on them somewhere...

So, trying to find out what we like, personal preferences etc, is part of this introductory social chit chat we're so dreadful at? Unless of course we find a shared passion.

Just a suggestion - give those queries their own threads, so each topic/interest area can expand into it's own discussion.

How many of you are interested in linguistics/foreign languages/computer languages?
Nope. Not disinterested, though.
How mechanically adept are you?
Moderate, but I have a relatively low interest in it, compared to other sciences.
On a scale of 0-10, how happy would you say you are right now? On average?
(10 being the highest).
5 - Not happy nor unhappy, but that really is circumstantial with me.
What kind of music do you like?Quite a lot, and very diverse. If the musicians know what they're doing, it usually ends up good.
How athletic would you say you are?
As athletic as Elvis was in the weeks before his death.
What type(s) were your parents? (If you know, obviously. If not, take a guess.)
I don't know and the only guess I can make is ESTP and INFJ
Would you consider yourself competitive?
Depends on the competition, but if I'm interested then hell yeah.
Is your room/house messy right now? (Might as well ask it here.)
It would be, If my mom didn't nag.
Do you generally prefer dark lighting or bright lighting in your room/house?
Darkness and natural light are better than manufactured. I'd say natural light over darkness.
Describe the most prominent thematic element present in your clothing.
I wear jeans, a black shirt with the occasional band design (either pink floyd or led zeppelin) and either a fur-lined coat or a very comfy leather jacket.
Gonna get me some tie-dye soon enough!

How many of you are interested in linguistics/foreign languages/computer languages?
Somewhat interested. Learning C++ at the moment, aswell as occassionally improving my french capabilities.
How mechanically adept are you?
I'm fairly adept with computers, but nothing else.
On a scale of 0-10, how happy would you say you are right now? On average?
(10 being the highest).
0-7, depending on a bunch of random factors.
What kind of music do you like?
Classic rock, some classical music. Mid-90s french hiphop.
How athletic would you say you are?
Somewhat. I do parkour and ride my bike to and from school daily.
What type(s) were your parents? (If you know, obviously. If not, take a guess.)
I can't say, really.
Would you consider yourself competitive?
Yes.
Is your room/house messy right now? (Might as well ask it here.)
Yes. Books everywhere, paper scraps in a stack on the desk.
Do you generally prefer dark lighting or bright lighting in your room/house?
I can't rightly say. Mostly bright because it's less stressful for the eyes when reading.
Describe the most prominent thematic element present in your clothing.

10% of the population don't wear clothes.

In the bath.

Then again, only 9.99999% have baths, which makes me wonder; just how psychologically crippled is that 0.00001%?

Well, we got off-topic didn't we? Ah well...

How many of you are interested in linguistics/foreign languages/computer languages?
I would love to learn Japanese or Chinese, but Latin and Greek aren't out of the question. Any computer language would also be fine.

How mechanically adept are you?
That depends. I know nothing about any sort of machines, except computers, but if you give me a machine, an instruction manual, and an hour I could probably figure something out. Or burnt the building to a crisp...

On a scale of 0-10, how happy would you say you are right now? On averag? (10 being the highest)
I'd say at this moment, a 7, but I usually hover around a 4... (being extremely introverted, I'm much more likely to cower in fear and pain half the day at my public middle school then actually participate in anything, which has really screwed with my view on humanity and how happy I am. The fact that I also have to pretend to be extraverted to get through the day is also incredibly hard to deal with. I guess I'm cynical now because of it)

What kind of music do you like?
Rock. But anything melodic and lyrical is fine. Evanescence and Within Temptation are my top favorites now (and ever!)

How athletic would you say you are?
About as athletic as a sloth. I hate physical activity.

What type(s) are your parents? (If you know, obviously. If not, take a guess)
I really have no clue. They're both ambivalent, though, when it comes to extraversion/introversion, so I don't even know the first letter.

Would you consider yourself competitive?
If it holds my interest. If not, forget it.

Is your room/house messy right now? (Might as well ask it here)
My house is clean (because of my mom) but my room is usually a nightmare. Dirty-sock-hanging-off-of-ceiling-fan-dirty. I can't be bothered with cleaning half the time.

Do you generally prefer dark lighting or bright lighting in your room/house?
I prefer dark lighting. Not that I get much say in my house, but still.

Describe the most prominent thematic element present in your clothing.
Teenage-girl-who-doesn't-care-what-she-looks-life-ninety-percent-of-the-time. Somewhere between boyish and girly. But definitely not either one of them.

Interesting questions.

How many of you are interested in linguistics/foreign languages/computer languages?
I speak English besides my main (Spanish), and started learning japanese, but quit because im damn lazy and lose interest in little time (im planing on resuming in the near future).

How mechanically adept are you?
I learn what i need to/ have to. Im not very interested in mechanic stuff.

On a scale of 0-10, how happy would you say you are right now? On averag? (10 being the highest)
Around 4, im about to change by job for a better one, that may rise it up to like, 6 (which is huge)

What kind of music do you like?
Simphonic metal, alternative, grunge, some other stuff.

How athletic would you say you are?
Not much, but im about to get into Aikido, will see how does that turn out

What type(s) are your parents? (If you know, obviously. If not, take a guess)
Dunno, one doesnt live with me, and the other is annoying, so i dont pay much attention.

Would you consider yourself competitive?
No, sometimes i put arbitrary conditions to myself when i compete even knowing that i cant win that way, i dont care either way. Unless its some kind of debete about a subject im interested in, if so, then someone is in trouble.

Is your room/house messy right now? (Might as well ask it here)
It is now, it was last week and will be always or until i get a girlfriend to do it for me ;)

Do you generally prefer dark lighting or bright lighting in your room/house?
Dark

Describe the most prominent thematic element present in your clothing.
There is no theme whatsoever, dont care much about it

There is always a pattern to be found in something selected by one singular individual.

I read every answer with piqued interest, btw, to all.
