I've been noticing that some jobs are doing the MBTI tests. Maybe they have been for awhile now.. and I'm the last to know. I just found it interesting since i was looking for a job last week, and part of the application process was taking a personality test. I guess this worries me because of how they might view my results if I answered them honestly.

The place I work does that to a lot of people (although I managed to get in without it). I'm not sure what they use exactly, but I know it isn't MBTI. Just something similar.

Lol yea I really think my personality makes me a terrible worker, granted I get by and actually do fine at work, but man if I acted like myself I'm sure I couldn't hold a job very long.

 Yikes! When did they start that crap? I've been out of the workforce for about 9 years. I might as well forget it. You know they're not gonna knowingly hire an INTP! Ok. I've got to figure out how to cheat this thing!

OK I panicked (sp?). Upon further reflection I have decided that this could be a good thing. Atleast maybe they won't stick me in a job that is completely unsuited for me and cause me to become suicidal (which actually happened to me before) Trust me, if you're an INTP - Do not let them stick you in any kind of customer service type job. Run! Run away!

I think it's been going on for quite some time now. The reasons for doing so could be to get an idea of what kind of a fit a candidate could be. Every office is its own environment.

There are legal implications for doing so. For example, does GINA (Genetic Information Non-Discrimination Act) apply? Is it covered under HIPAA?

I've been fortunate to not run into a situation where I've had to take one for employment purposes. I don't know that I would take one.

Another thing to consider is that there could be quite a few people who don't answer the questions honestly. Some candidates may have a sense of the environment of a particular work place already and answer questions accordingly. Take the time to think about what you want to do and if you really want to proceed with it.

This has been going on for a long time now. But with a little knowledge of MBTI it is not hard to cheat and present yourself as something a bit more suited to a job - if you think that's necessary.

Not many companies that use personality testing for screening will knowingly hire an INTP. If you actually want the job and can do it, its probably best to answer as an ExxJ.

That might also mean that I have to present myself as one. Maybe with enough espresso shots, I can pretend E to an extent. J?? Maybe if I find the job interesting enough. :storks:

I tend think most places would be thrilled to have an INTP. Unless it is the exact sort of place that an INTP would not want to work.

I'm pretty sure the MBTI was made to be some kind of career path assessment thing.

I don't like it when potential employers test me on how much alcohol I drink and stuff...

I thought this was illegal? But its ok to do a test after being hired. My former employer claimed the test was to understand what type of person I am. He said this way later in a conversation with another hire and me.

Perhaps it is illegal to base hiring on mental problems or stability, and a personality test could reveal that information if you aren't careful about it. But aren't INTPs the ones society usually labels as having "problems" because their different?

So far hiring on psych test results isn't illegal discrimination -- I think. Discrimination isn't automatically illegal; it has to be illegal discrimination to be actionable. One is entitled not to hire someone who is mentally incapable of performing assigned tasks. One is entitled not to hire a 130-pound six-foot six guy as a bodyguard. Etc.

However there are two problems.

Practically speaking, if a company is using these tests, without a lawsuit you aren't going to find out why they make the decisions they do make using such tests -- and then they'll deny attaching much weight and claim a nonhiring was based on lack of qualifications, misfiled paperwork, whatever.

Second, from our point of view, some of these tests are better than a lot of people think at ringing a bell when someone is trying to steer the outcome. Or, much worse, the people selling the tests to employers say that's the case. And you'll never know.

Reverse the situation, though. If someone won't hire you on the results of a test showing you to be INTP, you probably don't want to work for those people. They're wrapped too tight and counting paper clips on their coffee breaks.

And face this, also: Bad job fits make us miserable and we're hard enough to be around when we're not miserable.

More and more I think an early finding of INTP should mean that person is exposed to entrepreneurial opportunities. When I was in high school, if someone had said "You know how when the teacher is wrong but you can't do anything about it because they have authority to teach errors, and you sit there and want to scream? Yeah, well, if you get a job, odds are someone like that teacher is going to be your boss. You'll work hard for years to get to be a boss so you don't have to chafe under the shortcomings of a boss. Guess what? If you get to the top of the pile in 30 years, you'll then find you chafe under the shortcomings of the people you supervise."
"So, you know what? There's this thing called small business ownership. Find a product or service, set up a system to sell it, work for yourself, kick yourself when it goes wrong, expect some of the stuff you try to not work out, but seriously consider preparing yourself for this, otherwise you will have to endure fools your entire life."

I really wish someone had said that to me.

Anyway, be careful in any environment in which a fuzzy-seeming test is required. Those things are a wild joker added by a potential employer to the deck of cards you bring to the game.

Funny.. I work in a bakery/coffee shop. That espresso bit someone mentioned seems to work well enough for me. (Also, I get to hide behind large, noisy espresso machines and cant hear anyone when they try to talk to me half the time.) I had to take a personality test, and didnt skew the results much. But probably half of the people in my shop are introverted...

I do wonder how this sort of thing will pan out. I guess its just a way for employers to find the sort of employees they want...

Just make yourself sound like the best possible employee. It is fun to beat the system.
