Has anyone seen this movie? Thoughts? I haven't watched the full film yet.

One of the few films I can stand Jim Carey in. I didn't find it as Earth shattering as my friends had built it up to be, but it was a nice change from the sensationalist slop they'd ordinarily recommend. I'd probably watch it again, which is rare.

I thought it was a pretty impressive performance by Carey and Winslet, who essentially swap their typecasting and play against type. One of the more believable roles that Carey has played as an actor.

Great editing, since the story is still followable despite all the scene cuts and time jumps amid the disintegrating fabric of Joel's memories. Also some interesting subplots between the doctor and receptionist, and Elijah Wood's character and Clem.

That's tied together with the view on volatile relationship and how Joel and Clem solve their problem. As someone who has had at least one rocky relationship, I found their solution simple but profound... Realistic. I think our expectations for relationships cause us more problems than if we'd just accept our relationships as they are. One of my favorite Kauffman scripts.

I enjoyed it. I also enjoy the opening up of the ethics questions associated with erasing memories.

It's a good movie.

Carrey's a good actor, he just often picks up roles in shitty movies.

Why? Because he is silly, not-realistic?

I like Jim Carey because he seems to start with an off-beat premise and takes us logically to where it has to go. I love the fantasy. I would want to see more Jim Carey films but I imagine it's hard to write the screenplay and get it right.

As for the film, I'd go with what Jennywocky said.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't like him. I had just read about the film without realizing that Jim was the lead and had thought it would be the usual Jim Carey film when I started watching it. I was wrong.

One of my most liked films, in terms of dealing with a realistic portrayal of a relationship, as well as how memory works - two themes that I generally gravitate towards in film (along with the subject matter of identity).

It almost has a Black Mirror quality to it, in its unflinching treatment of human nature flaws as discovered through relationships, as well as dubious uses of science/technology as quick fixes to our problems.
