Yeah. An example of why people shouldn't automatically envy the rich and famous. It doesn't solve any problems of the mind. At whatever income level, you still have to deal with your own mind, your own baggage, all the inputs and pains and feelings of inadequacy in your life. If you don't find a way through the maze, you go insane or even die. Robin Williams is another example. It's a tragedy that someone with enough wealth to pay for any medical service available, or any psychological service, nevertheless kills himself.

Working on your own mind, your psyche, is a good thing to do. It's inherent wealth. Nobody can do it for you, and under normal societal circumstances, it's rather difficult for anyone to take it away from you.

I think he was accused of that, but his doctors gave him a clean bill of health or something. More about perception / fear than reality.
Wrt teh HIV: ahh, I see. Hadn't looked into it for a while so that rumor was the last thing I had heard about him basically.

One of these days I just know I will enter a news website and see the headline "(city name) destroyed by nuclear bomb".

There once were heroes for the ages
Now celebrities fill our pages

Once we decided not to strive
Only the big screen fills our lives

The sages say we won't survive

TV has changed has changed so much in the last few years...

ITV Breakfast used to be a serious affair.. Now, its anything but.

Regular news is interrupted with "inside" or sex jokes every 2 minutes (?)

Oh they're funny, but ?? what ever happened to uptight professionalism?

I can't keep up with the world.

Why is Neil Patrick Harris gay, or Homosexual?
Why are people homosexual, what makes them sexually attracted to the same sex?
Its so illogical if you ask me, I can't see the perspective of someone who's gay, maybe they do it for attention?

So I had this one thought-

---
What if we could still feel even after we died? We would still be in our "corpses", but we just wouldn't be able to move. Wouldn't that be the "ultimate" torture? You would feel yourself being gnawed on by those measly worms and flies, and you'd also be suffocated in your coffin. If you were unlucky, you'd feel yourself burning. (Or maybe you like that sensation). If this were true, would this not mean that reincarnations wouldn't exist? There also might be another version of us ahead of time (I had the thougt that while you exist, the one second before you existed, one second behind your reality. Of course this would be combining two of my nonsensical thoughts, but it is something to ponder over. Or is it true?) that would already be feeling this stuff after death.

Then the question- what would it feel like if some of your ashes were separate from your "main" feelers, assuming the above is true?

*of course, this is most likely NOT true... but still, consider it.:king-twitter:

Not "most likely". It is certainly not true. When your brain stops working you are gone. What can indeed happen is that doctors may think you're dead when you're not, and then you would be buried alive. But I guess you would suffocate before being eaten by worms.

The best theory I've come upon for homosexuality, is it is an epigenetic event. Chemicals douse an embryo or fetus in the womb. This methylates the baby's genes and changes how they are expressed. There doesn't have to be any "gay gene", all you have to do is mess up the normal genes with a sufficient wash of chemicals. The wash of chemicals seems to run in families, and the likelyhood of it occurring increases the more male children a woman has. Evolutionarily, I speculate it may be some kind of population regulator, but I don't have any proof of that.

In short, gays are born that way. It is not logic, it is a core biological drive that you as a cisgendered person don't have. This makes empathy difficult, as your own core biological drive is different from theirs.

I look at it psychologically whenever I can think of something, simply was introduced to male sexuallism more than female sexuallism as a kid, and grown to like male sexuallism. (Through a man's view)

I found a panic button this morning, in a grocery store parking lot. It's red, about 1 cm tall, and looks like it came off a very old school keyboard. It has the simple word PANIC on it. It doesn't have any mechanism attached, so pushing it doesn't do anything. I like the metaphor.

I stumbled across a site that claims, with plenty of well-written "academic support", that there are actually two interbreeding races of humans on earth - the souled and the soulless. The latter are supposedly almost perfect facsimiles of the souled and can only be discovered after long and careful observation.

This is incredibly fucked up, that people might read this shit and start getting a) paranoid about their loved ones and b) even more convinced of their superior enlightenment/intellectual ability/emotional sensitivity/whatever.

The 'saved vs unsaved' belief is damaging enough, but this is on a whole other level. Even more so because it claims the ratio of souled to soulless is about 50:50. Yay paranoid judgment.

Sounds like the N vs S divide on this forum. (But which one is soulless?)

Yeah. That kind of bias is way too easy to blow up into something monstrous. Preys on our ever-ready ability to dehumanise those we don't understand or like.

Well, S stands for Soul/Soulless and N stands for Nutjob... so I think that about sums it up. :p

An interesting thing to take away from this is to consider who you'd classify as soulless if you had to. It's a good way to question how and why you react to different people, what's missing for you in one interaction vs another, and what's within you that contributes to that perception. The question of why something resonates with one and not with another is fascinating. It's food for thought even if its original basis is completely spurious.

I like to imagine absurd things are true for a little while to see what weird little crevices are revealed in my thinking.

People would probably agree that using matching-algorithms to find friends would be a somewhat crude idea. When we apply that to romantic relationships, however, it is supposedly perfectly normal. That state of things either comes from a severe desperation of just the realization that romantic relationships is a much more trivial concept than friendship.

I am currently watching some huge muslim demonstrational parade. Now, I am in the middle of a european city, but these people somehow see it appropriate to defer the female part of the parade to its trailing part, in addition to having them all wear black burqas. The whole thing looks so comical. Here they are, trying to use western principles of freedom - to spit in its face.

I believe that people out there, are in fact cloning human beings.. and I know some people class clones, or fake people as soulless.

we're in 2016 - The future is upon us.

I wouldn't be to worried, if they are soulless or not. I'm sure there are plenty of real human beings who have destroyed their own souls., and we don't seem to be sufficiently worried about them.

I'm not worried about "soulless people"; I'm worried people actually buy into this crap because it perpetuates needless division and antagonism. Well, not worried. Disturbed. I already know people buy into a whole lot of drivel - this is just one more instance.

Wouldn't be surprised if we are in fact cloning people but I don't think this makes them different to any other human, except in origins.

How does it do that?

Gets people paranoid and/or judgemental about those around them and basically encourages them to be on the lookout for "soulless" behaviour, which means they'll be far more likely to imagine it. The site was insidiously planting seeds of paranoia. "Just think of how many lovers in the past might've been soulless. After all, it's roughly 1 out of every 2. People you've been close to..." "It could be anyone, anyone in your family. You don't know because they're so good at disguising themselves. You can only tell by long and careful observation!"

People already find all sorts of ways to imagine themselves better than those different to them. This particular way is particularly powerful, as most people will consider themselves souled, ie one of the legitimate judges of those who are not.

It's also the kind of thing where you can't get a definitive answer either way. It's the same as the philosophical zombie (someone who looks and acts and responds in all ways as a sentient human, but internally actually lacks sentience, conscious experience and qualia). Because you might decide someone is souled then second-guess yourself if someone else comes along and says, "No, he just has an extra good disguise!". There's no criteria by which someone can be externally determined as souled or not, but the way they've worded it there's endless opportunity to be suspicious and unsure if you're seeing a sentient person or an ingenious illusion. It doesn't lead anywhere but negative places. It's a rabbit hole of paranoia and mistrust. Not the first time this kind of thing has come along either. Witch-hunts.

It was just a random thought though. Don't really want to go on about it any longer. (I'd rather delve right into the belly of this madness. :p)

Thinking your thoughts out loud to the point that you can hear them is extremely time consuming and inefficient. At the same time relying to much on subconscious thought processes when coming to a conclusion leaves a somewhat incomplete picture(because you do not fully know what you are thinking). However by not having to articulate to yourself and instead relying on intuition to just "know" your thinking becomes orders of magnitude faster, while not entirely knowing what you know.

It's a hard balance to strike and I am not sure which is better. Maybe I should experiment a bit more formally on this, hmm. Funny thing the amount of times I start of thinking on a subject with "hmm" and ending with "yea that's how it is" without any significant number of articulate thoughts in between is staggeringly high(it does help that the feeling is usually vindicated as well).

I am part of a "Recovering from Religion" group in Asheville, North Carolina, in the Bible Belt of the USA. I'm not personally; I'm just trying to help friends of mine that are. Some of the beliefs of the mainstream regional religions, are so "odd" that this particular one doesn't actually shock me by comparison. We have an ex Jehovah's Witness that talked about the BITE model for cults:

  • Behavior control
  • Information control
  • Thought control
  • Emotional control
Imagine people who are extremely "cut off" from any other source of information, reasoning, or peer support about their reality, and I think you can see how people can be made to believe nearly anything. Well, until it doesn't work for some reason. I've been asking our ex J.W. colleague about that. I think he said music and engineering were eventual "outs" for him, that the J.W. system simply didn't "work" as compared to anything he had to engineer.

That state of things either comes from a severe desperation of just the realization that romantic relationships is a much more trivial concept than friendship.

I don't accept it, 'cuz, you know, I've thought a lot about how people work, and what different people want out of things. A lot of people haven't thought much about it though. So just as some people are bamboozled by math, statistics, and charts, those people can be "led". The supposed quality of an algorithm is an appeal to authority.

I believe the algorithms are pushed as a business model. People WILL pay to find someone they can have sex with + maybe love. People don't seem to be quite as willing to pay to have friends, although there is some market for that as a service, for instance look at Meetup.com.

Anyways, businesses use the algorithms to get people to invest their time in the site. For instance eHarmony asks a HUGE load of questions. So much time answering the questions to even get started with anything, that by the time you're asked to pay up, you've put 1..2 hours into your life story or whatever. So a lot of people probably say "Oh, I've put so much time into this already, I'm paying to finish this!" Whereas I said, this is bollocks, I know what they're doing, they just want my money.

Algorithms can be used as a "compliance ritual". What various websites have found that try to do that with me, is I'm not compliant! So I don't make them money.

You can pay for behaviors and actions but you can't buy feelings.

I remember you mentioning that somewhere.

I'm sadly not shocked by what I read at all, just reminded of our great potential for being screwed. I was brought up believing homosexuality was the result of demon possession amongst other little joys and know how easy indoctrination is. Sometimes it does surprise me, but I'm generally more surprised by those who think it can't happen. I guess that's almost indoctrination of its own kind. It always amazes me when subcultures (like of 'rationality' or 'materialism') aren't aware other subcultures exist beyond some weird non-human archetype.

I found out that my uncle died today (we were not close). At first I felt a rush of superiority; I felt myself saying "another person I outlive". But after a while I ended up thinking of the impact this would have on my father, and it worried me.. would he become bitter and more angry than ever? He seemed to be in a good mood, which was a little eerie. My father is never one to show any signs of weakness so I suppose its just natural for him to act this way. I just kept feeling "so it starts" thinking of all my uncles and aunts along with my parents who are going to die at some point, hopefully before me.

How may I help you today?

Sinead at 16:57, Oct 12:
Hi... I have a question about my pay and go credit.. I topped up £10 last night before I went to bed. I wanted to buy a 500mb data extra, but this service was down. Vodaphone immediately charged me £2 for the days use (even tho I didn't want to opt in). I turned my data OFF last night and went to sleep. I've just woken up to be told my credit is in negative figures

Sinead at 16:57, Oct 12:
Where has my £10 top up gone

Sinead at 16:58, Oct 12:
whilst I've been asleep?

Ileana at 16:58, Oct 12:
Sinead have you kept Data ON whole night?

Sinead at 16:59, Oct 12:
OFF the whole night

Ileana at 16:59, Oct 12:
Let me check.

Ileana at 17:01, Oct 12:
Please confirm the first 2 and the last 2 characters of the memorable word set up on account.

Sure.

Sinead at 17:05, Oct 12: (I thought this was weird, like, what?!)
Yes :)

Ileana at 17:06, Oct 12:
Sinead As I can see it is showing whole usage for data.

Ileana at 17:06, Oct 12:
Credit has been used for data only .

Ileana at 17:06, Oct 12:
But not to worry.

Ileana at 17:06, Oct 12:
Lr\et me talk to my supervisor what best I can do for you.

Ileana at 17:07, Oct 12:
Let**

Sinead at 17:08, Oct 12:
Thank you. I topped up with the intention of buying a data extra.. but voda said the service wasn't available. It immeditaely hooked up to the internet (incurring the £2 charge) but I did turn it off until just now. The cost is just not sustainable at this rate.

Ileana at 17:08, Oct 12:
Shall I add 2GB data of worth £10?

Ileana at 17:09, Oct 12:
As I can see you almost spent £20 in a week?

Sinead at 17:09, Oct 12:
That would be awesome.

Ileana at 17:09, Oct 12:
Bingo.

Ileana at 17:09, Oct 12:
You can get 2GB data in £10 in future if you use data alot.

Ileana at 17:10, Oct 12:
We just introduced new data pack of worth £10 and that gives 2GB data for 30 days.

Sinead at 17:10, Oct 12:
That's just what I need, I wasn't aware it existed..

Ileana at 17:11, Oct 12:
Cheers its active now.

Ileana at 17:11, Oct 12:
Please check and confirm with me.

Ileana at 17:11, Oct 12:
Is there anything else I can do for you today?

Sinead at 17:12, Oct 12:
That's brilliant.. thank you both... No that's all thanks.. is the new data plan a rolling package, or do I need to manually opt in again when needed?

Ileana at 17:12, Oct 12:
yes by dialing 2345.

Ileana at 17:12, Oct 12:
Thats for future.

Good Bye!

Well, I suppose I'm happy with the result for the moment, but it is annoying that these guys never want to address the the root causes of the issues; my data was turned off, so by some glitch in the matrix they're bleeding me dry.. and their services are constantly down, which is a subject they never want to acknowledge. .. walked into the store the other week after their pay and go services had been down again for three days, I told them that and asked them why, but I was told that the problem was with my sim card, their services are great. I reiterated that their network said it was experiencing difficulty, so why would it be blaming it's self, if it was a technical issue on my end? I just had the same drone response repeated back to me. The lady then proceeded to tell me that I could purchase a new, defect free, sim - she would help but unfortunately their systems were down so I would have to come back another day

Anyway, there are still a number of unresolved issues. But at least their customer services are complaint, I was not expecting that.

What the fuck just happened?

You'll find all kinds when you mines da front lines.

Tier 1 customer facing support is made up of varying ratios of:

* Doesn't know
* Doesn't care
* Cares enough
* Competent enough

Today you were lucky. Next time maybe a little less.

Tier 1 isn't going to know much about the issues you have with the portal - they would get updates on that from another team which is closer to being responsible for that issue. Probably the operations team responsible for keeping the portal functioning on the customer side and also talking to the internal IT infrastructure on the back side which are causing the issues you encounter with the system being down are already aware of the issues and trying to do something about it OR Tier1 is not feeding important customer experience data back to that operations team or the customer advocate responsible for making sure that stuff gets actioned by someone who does care and is competent enough to do something. OR there's a big snail of a project stuck to a glacier it's trying to climb uphill on, and sometime in the next year or two they will fix it (one of my providers spent 2 years fixing their customer self service portal... wtf).

Basically what just happened is normal. :(

I'm sorry. :(

I have gained a possible infatuation with space theories and exploration, and I've been looking into space-time continuum, but the thing is, while binge researching I came across the moon landing and mars rover stuff being so called 'bullshit' and I kinda believe it. When NASA releases images on mars they block out the sky and any reflections of it, and NASA will only take pictures with a short horizon line, and maybe they just put a rover in the desert and said its mars... And the moon landing was just propaganda, and people have good reasons why it might be, and also ideas to prove it is.

I and they might be wrong, but its debatable when into detail if you ask me.

It's 5.20am, I have the munchies, but the only munch I can find is asparagus soup.

What the fuck does asparagus taste like? Should I bother?

Sitting in the middle of a lecture of a Nobel laureate, who by the way is in his eighties, I noticed there are a few students in here who chuckle amongst themselves whenever he makes a mistake. This has happened throughout the course.

Little shits. The fact that he's still sharp enough to teach an advanced subject like this in his eighties should be enough to supply enough "shut the fuck up" for 12-16 weeks.

If it's pretty fresh, I would eat it. I like asparagus. Especially with garlic, salt, and olive oil.

What steps are you willing to take to prove it one way or another? Such as searching for multiple sources, not just ones that say the same thing. Or talking to someone who actually worked at NASA.

You can tell someone to STFU yourself, in not so many words, if they are really being disruptive. Had to do it at a comedy show once. This guy was drunk and heckling the comedian and just wouldn't stop. Sorta thought he was having his own personal conversation with the comedian about topics of great intellectual interest to him. The comedian was trying to be nice to the guy about it and politely disengage, but it wasn't enough. The guy was not that far in back of me and finally I turned around and said what must have been on lot of people's mind in the small theater, something like, "Dude, seriously, will you PLEASE BE QUIET?!" Made it really clear with my tone of voice and body language that I was pissed with him. My Dad backed me up, saying, "We're here to listen to him [the guy onstage], not you." The guy did finally shut up after that.

Yeah, I'm often the one who will step up and say something when nobody else will. Partly because I'm not afraid of someone taking a swing at me if they don't like it. I do calculate whether it would escalate into weapons or multi-person violence though. Haven't really had that happen though. Usual threat for "more alarming" circumstances is showing that I'm getting ready to call the cops on my cell phone. I don't have any problem with letting the professionals straighten people out.

I don't know, research by higher proved, or with more logos and ethos websites, someone who works at NASA might lie or not know about it.

I got in trouble today in my 1st hour for being honest. The teacher was giving out homework packets 5 pages thick, and said distinctly "These are high point assessments, and everybody should do them!", so I asked "What if we don't care about this unit, and will it ever help us in life?" She looked at me with the most disturbed face and only said "That is inappropriate." And a mummer started, so I started to think; Why don't we have a choice in what we learn? It just buzzed in my mind all day, and I asked another kid; "Do you give any shits about this?" He responded "No, no I don't." And so now I am questioning if school is just giving us illusions to make money from our parents. But I don't know and I might be biased..

I personally think reorganising school to be more focused on a specific field earlier would be beneficial overall.
