Does the fact that pedophilia is so widespread mean that pedophilia is endemic in human nature?

That's clearly not what I mean. Age eighteen is arbitrary. I mean like forty two and twelve years old. Hopefully that example doesn't lead to definitional befuddlement or overblown analysis paralysis.

Snafu do you mean endemic in that it is fundamentally characteristic of our species, or that it is an isolated characteristic of our species? I assume you mean the former.
Our species? No. Men are far more likely to demonstrate pedophile behaviour than women, so this might actually be one of those cases where the label 'man kind' is actual.
I can completely understand the tendency from a evolutionary perspective: sex costs the male very little, and in return for this behaviour he is rewarded with the off-chance of successful offspring. Otherwise, it could just be a byproduct of a successful reproduction strategy (pork everything that moves).
I find it interesting lurking on 4chan and observing the debates between anonymous pedophiles (who generally claim to be inactive, but into CP etc.) and the moral fags. The pedophiles almost always present a much stronger argument than the people society would label right. Question: if someone has a sexual attraction to children but does not demonstrate this in his behaviour, does that make him a pedophile or something else?
It could be a byproduct from relative age attraction, or the lack of it in some people. If I am expected to be attracted to people around my age group when I am 12-14, and to not grow out of this tendency, then pedophilia would be a possible result.
I'm not sure on the stats for fetishism and pedophilia. Is it possible fetishism is an umbrella term under which pedophilia sits? I believe (don't quote me on this) that fetishism can be directed at pretty much anything and is a learned behaviour, this could include children

I don't think pedophilia is very widespread, more that hebephilia and ephebophilia are commonly mislabeled as pedophilia. Those are easily explained by evolutionary drives, it's natural to be attracted to potential mates.
The only explanation I know of for pedophilia is that we naturally develop a protectional kind of love/attraction for younger children, and it's not terribly hard for our monkey sex brains to turn that into sexual attraction. Also I could see people who find innocence arousing developing the same attraction.
What makes you think pedophilia is so common? I haven't really noticed that, in my experience the vast majority of pedophilia references are actually talking about hebe/ephebo.

I really like your point about not growing out of previous attractions. There's probably a good explanation for pedophilia in there as well, if you had sexual experiences when you were at a pre-pubescent age your attractions could carry over.

That's more of what I was trying to allude to - as an aside, there are some indigenous Polynesian folk who perform fellatio and cunnilingus on one another...at age seven in front of their parents. At any rate I firmly agree with Gore Vidal: "Between the economics of the city and the taboos of the tribe we have created a monstrous sexual ethic." Christianity, silently though it may stomp, is the impetus and steering wheel of sociopolitical policy and probity within tribes and peoples comprising and proactively composing the United States. The yardstick by which laws, censorship, and other forms of buffoonery are tailored. On the former point about the economics of the city, the manner in which society is structured disincentives unprotected sexual intercourse and childbirth (for economic reasons) while fiscally rewarding abortion and birth control long-term. This is a mixed blessing, because it goes against Nature, but really an unqualified windfall for the following reasons. By preventing another life from entering this wretched world one disallows one's actions from contributing to the exacerbation of world problems (energy consumption, disease, starvation, etcetera) - as an added bonus, some money will be saved personally. Nonetheless, the qualitative factor of Christian probity and the quantitative factor of economics apropos sexual relations and society have transmogrified and degenerated sex for modern humans.
