Caveats. It will cost $1500, and you need to submit an idea to Google of what you want to do with it to get accepted.

Ohmegosh this is so cool.

It's gotta be pretty distracting to drivers, though.

*jaw drops* This is just like the HUD from a video game! And I've seen this concept in fiction, but to see it become reality... sweet mother of baby seals, Google Glass is amazing. Now, if they could just integrate a thought reading device to make queries automatic. Oh, but wait, won't there be advertisements? Darn.

Thanks for the heads up Architect. I've been keeping track of AR developments and it's been some time since I last heard of Glass. Good to see Google is opening it up even more.

I'll have to think of something nice to get my dirt claws on one.

I wonder if this contest is open to non-Americans..

EDIT: Nevermind, it's not. I was expecting this. Self-centered bastards.

Google Glasses™

That's a common mistake but it's actually "Google Glass", not "Glasses". The screen sits out of your line of sight.

It's gotta be pretty distracting to drivers, though.

The terms of the agreement presently are that you won't wear them while driving.

I wonder if this contest is open to non-Americans..

EDIT: Nevermind, it's not. I was expecting this. Self-centered bastards.

It's a regulatory issue, pure and simple.

I'll only use it if there's a sunglass version.

Put missiles and machine guns on a supersport motorbike and use the glasses as target locking device.

But I suspect the whole eyeball sensing thing might take a little while.

Oh well, I bet getting away with murder and hit-and-run would be incredibly more difficult.

Fixing things, building things, and learning things would be incredibly more easy. (best reason)

Daydreaming would be the norm now.

That MI3 thing would be possible.

GOD

Scanning shit. Just read it. Still tedious.

Cheating would be easier.

Nostalgia would turn into a real disease.

Instagram photo bombardment.

More videos I presume.

I think.

Once everyone has Google Glass.

We'd just be fucking smart all the time.

I mean imagine debates where no one can lie about a well known fact and get away with it.

Universities could really risk it or reach greater heights. I mean, there's no point of a teacher showing up anymore to teach. They could just record videos and play them till the end of time and everyone just learns as the do their homework.

Got kinda carried away.

Too bad I don't live there.

I wonder if looking in the corner of your eye is going carry the same stigma as looking at a pocket device. How am I supposed to think now? Hopefully, the talking to yourself bit will stop looking weird at some point, at least. I think there'll always be problems with getting unwanted attention here though.

I'm curious as to how other companies will eventually respond; Apple in particular. If we end up with multiple platforms, I wonder how or if they'll play with each other's phones. This might lead to more investment in one company; bigger platform wars.

I'm also interested to see what'll become of the phone over time. Glass is more seamlessly integrated, but seems to have an inherently trickier interface to work with. I imagine a pocket device will still have its uses, such as gaming and...? I'm not sure. Maybe we'll keep one around just for a better interface.

I was just thinking, maybe in a version of google glass™ in the future, instead of voice commands or even hand jesters to interact with the glass, maybe they could install a camera facing the eyeball, motioning the retina, and have all information created by the movement of your eyeball.

This could lead to extremely fast communication, although might be a strain on the eye. Much like how Stephen Hawking uses a speech generating device. I'd bet they could master it though.

Only a little while away till we have permanent sensors implanted in our skull for seemingly instantaneously communication with whichever devices we have at the time.l

To me the interface and way we convey information/ our thoughts seems to be the biggest bottle neck right now.

Once we had to go to a computer at a desk, then we started carrying them in our pocket which still entails looking away, now we can look up and to the right briefly.

That would take lot of battery and processing, as it would have to run all day.

I've got an IPad mini in my hands right now, I don't mean to give an apple love speech I'm just saying what will the Glass give me that I don't already have? The only thing it can do that a pad or phone can't already do better is take hands free photos/video and give a limited visual overlay, and for that I'd really want it over the centre of my vision anyway.

If I took a motorcycle helmet and got a set of screen goggles (the idea is that you can use them to watch DVDs anywhere, it hasn't taken off) and added a Bluetooth headseat and some sports cameras strapped on to the outside of the helmet what I'd have is full augmented reality, plus protection for my noggin, plus the ability to speak in public without anyone being ale to hear what I'm saying, the problem is that I'd look funny but this is just an example, I'm sure with the money that went into the glass they could make something like a full face mask with all these features.

Or an Ironman helmet :D

Edit: Does the glass have an inboard accelerometer, gyroscope with gravity detection, GPS and wide range RF receiver and transmission?
That's what I expect for $1500

I think I might have miscommunicated somewhat; my fault. I'll explicate.

I was largely referring to our inclination to look in the corner of our eyesight when thinking. This could cease to communicate thought process, and instead imply that we're interacting with our computer, which would easily be taken as rude when in conversation. Plus, even without the device, this might be interpreted as a longing for our computer.

Also, specifically that last line, of the first paragraph, was referring to the voice activation aspect.

Actually I really love the Ironman helmet idea, it turns everyone into robots :D

The faceplate could be a screed of LEDs or better and with noise cancelation you can say smile and the smile emote will appear in the screen, indeed there could be quite a wide range of single word activated emotes like: frown, smirk, pout, uncertain, abashed, ashamed, sexy, etc.

What you're looking at is like an iPad on your face and instead of touching it the interface involves eye tracking, blinking, verbal commands (to speak externally you look at the speak icon to switch external speaking on/off, your voice could be modified too) head tilting, perhaps some degree of jaw and brow movement as well.

In effect your entire head becomes robotic and with it on you can do all sorts of robotic stuff like voice modification, amplification, external sound amplification or reduction, multiple vision modes, full AR, motion tracking, crosshairs automatically linked to the weapon you're holding (or whatever) telescopic and microscopic vision, internal music playing, external music playing, filtering out music or filtering out background noise in favour of speech, perhaps even a specific person's voice, that laser mic trick spies use, etc, etc, etc.

It's also y'know a phone, internet/tv/movie/game device, camera, camcorder, basically EVERYTHING.

*smacks back* I'm a futurist and inventor-in-training myself, it's my job to sharpen the bleeding edge, besides everyone who rides a Segway loves it but you don't see them every day do you?

It's the purpose of an inventor/futurist to figure out why and fix it.

The problem with a Segway is exactly the same, it doesn't do anything a bicycle can't do already and a bicycle dosen't need to be charged up, and if you want powered transport there's electric bicycles too, the only advantage the Segway has is that you can get away with using it indoors, but how many indoor spaces are so large that you would benefit from it?

If I knew how to fix the Segway problem I'd be a wealthy man.

Rather the Segway problem is a lack of a problem to fix in the first place, inventing is all about fixing problems, so what problem does the Google Glass fix?

I'm not saying it isn't awesome, because it is.

I'm saying I don't see myself posting on the forum or watching YouTube while walking down the street, and if I'm sitting down or standing in an elevator I can use a phone or pad, the only advantage there being the convenience of not having to hold it, but even then I could invent a some manner of light robotic arm to hold my device for me and write eye tracking software for the cameras these devices already have, now I have something that does what the Glass does, but with a bigger screen.

A chest plate! :D

You look down, a camera spots your eyes and the pad hinges up from your chest where it was previously laying flat, then when you look up it lays flat against your chest again.

It could actually be quite big.

Also, breast plates, I cannot be the only guy in the world with a fetish for boob shaped breast plates.

Correct, plus a bike is more versatile. Inventions fail usually not because they're bad, but because they were introduced at the wrong time. This is the problem of not a compelling enough use case. Projects also fail when they fail to differentiate from the competetion enough, which happened with the Segway.

Aside from being a hands free camcorder what does it do that a smartphone can't?
I already have a head mountable sports camera, it's activated with a single button press.

I was being generous with the YouTube & forum comment.

Basically I'm asking you to sell it to me and frankly I'm not yet sold, indeed I suspect that like with a Segway the douche-bag principle applies, could you imagine talking out loud to it in public?
Isn't it just a tad conspicuous?

Looking at people's faces while doing so. It's a modern social malady to always be staring at devices... Of course, introverts don't talk to people... Since it's in your head, the use becomes nearly seamless. And it's the unique seamlessness that's the main selling point for the current, first generation models, not an attempt at surpassing a tablet's features (which would be rather impossible atm).

Besides the handsfree camcoreder, go around looking at google maps in an ipad enough and I assure you your face will end up on a lamp post). Also, taking a phone out of your pocket just to check the weather or a message is rather a nuisance, when it could just appear in the corner of your eye. Of the most common activities I do in my smartphone (which are rather simple things), Glass could do about 80% of them.

Summary: suck it, cog. :D If you were a good inventor you could obviously see the potential even in a pared down device, and wouldn't need me to tell it to you...

It's gotta be pretty distracting to drivers, though.

Actually I would love to see this using gps. Trucks have major problems with metro area highways, it would be a huge assistance to overlay the path onto the road in order to keep your eyes on the cars. I mean absolutely massive improvement in safety.

Oh, and what about linking it to your car, in order to show you how long it would take to slow to certain speeds. Like have distance markers to 45-35-25-15 mph up ahead, and colored zones for chances of death if striking an object in those ranges.

Aye.

Google's essentially taking what is now iPhones/Smartphones (which were the next major innovation b4 cellphones) and condensing it further into two square cm, and that'll force it to get even smaller later.

Technology's really reaching a godly level. o_o
I mean, if you wanna know anything, now you can just...
say a prayer to god google! And it will impart wisdom! :balance:

Soon it'll be commonplace for everyone to voice-access all their technology (like the Starship Enterprise computer).

Basically I'm asking you to sell it to me and frankly I'm not yet sold[...]

Let me.

Have you ever played a video-game in 3D? (Yes, you have.)

Imagine a video-game where you had to reach into your pocket and stare at an external device everytime you needed to know anything or talk to anyone. You don't get a chance to list your objectives. Instead, you are expected to just remember them. Still, the game is so hard that just the top 1% of the population is somewhat decent at it. Keeping check of stuff is so tedious in fact that you rarely even think about what your objectives are and find yourself at insufficient credit at the end of each month.

With google-glasses in the same game, you could have a map at the side of the screen, along with the sum of money that you currently have on you. With the command of "Pause", you could even have an inventory, and your list of objectives. You can start to keep score of your IRL mini-games, like how fast you get to work. Hell, you could even race your ghost.

Excellent. Removes the separation between the digital/virtual world and the real world. Emails, SMS, notifications become part of life instead of an annoying extra.

I'd love to see some sort of tagging system that lets you spot others who tag themselves as, say, #INFJ, and vice versa.

Is the removal of that separation necessarily a good thing? I'm not arguing pro or con yet; I know little of Glass.

You can do that with the Mirror API and some people have done an app for that already You can also hack it (small hack - heck they left the front door open) to run an Android app, which I've done (I've got a couple personal applets running on it)

I'd love to see some sort of tagging system that lets you spot others who tag themselves as, say, #INFJ, and vice versa.

That would be interesting. I'd Mirror API that one.

Well right now you use your voice without thinking about it. It's a part of you. When you go on this forum it's clearly something different, you need a big computer, or even a tablet or a phone is something outside of your personal sphere you bring in and out. Maybe you have a special place to sit too (a desk).

With Glass it's always on you and notifications are instant. Wondering how to get somewhere? Ask it using voice recognition and it will give you a turn-by-turn map and whisper directions in your right ear. Want to do a Google search? Similar. When you get emails they automatically push to your device and you can reply (using voice recognition) so it's just like your built in "voice" system.

That's what I mean, it's the first time that the virtual/digital world truly comes into your personal demesnes.

How does Glass differ from a phone with a touch screen and headphones, then, except in looking rather silly and leaving impressions on your nose? I suppose that one needn't pants to keep it around, but those situations in which pants are not worn also tend to be those situations in which phones are not helpful.

Hasn't it already done so with the smart phone?

Nope. It's different, you have to experience having it for a couple of days to really understand. It's one step from having a computer chip in your brain I think.

Compare getting an email

Phone:
  • Ping (get a sound notification)
  • Dig out your phone from your pocket, or across the room
  • Hit the on button
  • <potentially> Authenticate to get in the device
  • Find the phone app (either from the home screen, where maybe you have to navigate too, or the list of running apps, or whatever)
  • Open Phone app
  • Wait to synchronize (true for both iPhone Mail and Gmail)
  • Find email
  • Touch email
  • Success!

Glass

  • Hear a soft chime in your ear
  • Either nod your head, or tap the side of Glass
  • Look up and read email.

However, it leaves you focusing on a very close piece of glass, and doing strains your eyes. A phone, conversely, can be held at any distance (I usually hold mine with arms outstretched). Moreover, one cannot type silently with Glass, making every e-mail a phone call in slow motion--a phenomenon quite unnerving for unwitting passers-by.

It's not as slow as it seems, mind you.

Like I said you have to use it to get an idea, I used the speed to illustrate the point, but it's different. Again it becomes more a part of you, in my experience.

The effective focal length is arms length, I believe because they have focusing and 'defocusing' lenses before and aft the screen. No strain.

Ah, like a lightsaber becomes an extension of a Jedi's arm?
