GREATNESS vs HAPPINESS, which one would you choose?

Hello anyone, there are two things i want to do in my life: doing scientifical research that could potentially change things in this world(cure disease) is the first ... the second thing is that i wanna live a happy, chilled, great, comfortble and life full of adventures, travels and art.

SO, i'm INTP 5w4, wich makes things really diffficult: if i choose to commit for the society( social sciences, political science , becoming a leader, psychology, human sciences, anthropology), i'll loose my kid's dream( becoming a scientifical researcher)... If i choose to be top researcher( cancer research, biochmistry,..Etc) I won't certainly be happy(all my professors seem to be boring INTP 5w6), have great kids, raise them and live a life full of happiness, joy, love and freedom. IT could be easy for me to be happy but i feel that greatness(I always wanted since little to find something critical in the course of the humanity... basically dreamed to find cure for AIDS or cancer) matters more for me than happiness.

Also, what i found out(and ill certainly find a lot of other things out.. you know the INTP blind spots..) is that research in the real world is not optimal... MOney rules everthing, pharmaceutical firms rule the research industry wich means... no creativity.
Also i idealized researchers, i thought they where highly intelligent and creative people... reality is that they are selected among the hardest rigid workers(thus zero creativity, which is critical for research), highly specialized people with little to none imagination researchin in one field.

They say that happiness is easy when you don't complicate yourself, i believe it's truth; no need of a lot of things to be happy; but to become great is another thing... thruth be said people who live simple lives will never be great... and I want to be great + i want to be happy+ i want to change the world with my greatness. WhIch dream should i let go; wich part of me should i let go? should i fulfill my intellectual inflated EGO or should i fulfill my emotional needs first?

Heelpp.... do you think research could fulill INTP or should i just drift to my natural abiities jobs( psychiatrist, social worker, ethnology, social sciences and philosophy, political sciences, ART, music..)

PS: do you think i'm narcissist dreamer which might be true !

I wouldn't make that assumption. If you really are an INTP then think different.

What does that mean? I'm the realist INTP out there man !

NO really, top researchers seems to be so full of them(whithout a reason) and many of the researchers don't find anything "valuable" at the end of their life... theyre just being lifetime uncreative knowledgeable professors who are never home with their kids and never get laid + they know only about their stuff.. boring.

Me if i choose the professors way; I would like to be in the heat of creation.

ANd i might be wrong though with my assumption.. i'm gradually finding out that INTP's have massive and extensive blind spots.

My point is that it does not necessarily mean that you have to be miserable to be a research scientist (I know, I once was a research scientist).

Precisely, INTP's (myself included) Ti has a tendency to reach a conclusion without enough information, or faulty information which Ne is supposed to provide it.

The mistake here is (attention class)

  • Researchers are unhappy
  • I want to be a researcher
  • Therefore I'll be unhappy

Name the fallacies.

Research isn't necessarily a life of unhappiness, but is often one of frustration that is filled with cliques and bureaucracy. It isn't like this all the time, but is definitely something all researchers will experience. It ultimately comes down to what you value, which for you appears to be happiness (why else would you fear losing it?).

Happy vs research aren't mutually exclusive. Are you happy now? If so, I'd suggest holding on to the one you have while seeking the other. If you're not then either option is an improvement, right?

Break the mould. Be an inventive researcher. Be a happy, crazy, fun-loving, creative scientist.

If you have the aptitude, you're capable.

I failed Einstein's logic puzzle today, so perhaps I can redeem myself by identifying the fallacy:

Invalid Premise: Not all researchers are currently unhappy. Architect and TheHabitatDoctor are or were researchers, and they are or were happy in so being.
Black Swan Fallacy: Even if all researchers are (presumably currently) unhappy, then you could still be happy as a researcher by being be the first researcher to become happy.

what is logic may not always be true.

what is logic may not always be true.

*chuckles* Well yes, of course, reasoning from flawed premises would lead to flawed results. But, for the sake of the argument, we hold our assumptions to be true. I feel a lecture coming on...

The motivations for making your sort of argument usually falls into one of three categories:

--The Nihilistic Nuke: epistemeological nihilism, when backed by Godel's inconsistency Theorem, destroys any argument by putting all axioms into infinite doubt.
--The "Is Ought" Apathy Assault: the "Is Ought" rule proves existential and moral nihilism, thus destroying any argument existential and moral philosophy; however, this sort of attack is oft made by those who simply lack values. Lacking values is OK, but attacking an argument based on that lack is... in poor taste.
--The "Depressed Sigh": This is a combination of the Nihilistic Nuke and the Is-Ought Apathy Assault, and it is made by those simply overcome by the meaninglessness of existence.

Although all of these arguments are technically true and make philosophy nothing more than a form of art, most of those aware of this fact think and argue for entertainment, and, as in art, willingly suspending one's disbelief regarding the axioms of an argument is crucial to enjoying it.

Happiness is achievable. A cure for cancer? Only with lots of luck. Don't expect to "achieve greatness" simply by becoming a researcher.

Ask yourself what you would gain personally from each. In the end, you are pursuing something for yourself, and must ask if it will bring you satisfaction. If becoming great= personal fulfillment, and personal fulfillment = happiness, then becoming great= happiness.

But since you think greatness does not equal happiness, then clearly it will leave you with nothing but a mention in the history books. But you won't/ can't care about this because you will be dead. So in the end what does the pursuit of greatness leave you?

As for happiness, you pursue it be what ever means you see fit, it will be achieved by doing whatever suits you best. Pursue this thing, whatever it may be. Prioritize your needs. This is a thing that will be found.
