Others have hinted at creating pieces of music, which got me thinking that maybe I'll record snippets of myself when I sit behind the kit and play around.

Hope you enjoy it - I'm not looking for any feedback, just thought I'd share a little bit of my musical expression with everyone while I mess around. I will post more if people enjoy it, it's easy enough to record and upload.

Enjoy!

Not into that kind of stuff - very cool though. Did you learn by yourself?

I like stuff like @1:13 & the endpiece, I love it when drum solos get rhythm heavy.

Do you make song-ready drum tracks? You clearly have the skill. Occasionally I come up with free flowing melodies in my head, but they don't translate well to a set of drums due to lack of training.

New piece (if you can call it that)

http://picosong.com/FPFV/

Thanks for the compliments, yes self-taught Coolydudey. With the exception of correct technique, which my dad taught me...although I somewhat regret not having spent more time on a practice pad.

I don't make song-ready tracks, although maybe I should. Drumming is more of a creative outlet for me than anything, but recently I've been a bit antsy and feeling like I should be channelling it into something other than just personal enjoyment, which was a large motivator behind this thread.

Just to document myself playing the kit without any specific aim to create anything, sort of like a sound-check.

In regards to lack of training, that is I guess up to you. Though I can definitely reference some useful starting material if you like :phear:

I guess I'll continue to update the thread then, maybe I'll get more serious eventually and record more than just dicking around. I'll do something with groove for my next update since ESC seems to like that sort of thing.

Cheers all for positive feedback :)

Grooves would be good because then I can Jam over the top :D

Sort of forgot I promised to do more of a groove piece...it will be here soon :phear:

EDIT: Funk 'groove' http://picosong.com/FcsY/

Hawkeye suggested jamming over the top, so I just played a relatively simple funk beat that shouldn't be too difficult to jam over. Not really a groove in its own right, but can be made one.

Ditto on the 1:13 section of the first one. The beat becomes instantly relatable, but not simplistic. There's a cool quasi backbeat going on to keep it interesting.

I think it would be fun to try to write some music on top of these jams. Tempo changes would make it tricky unless a better musician than me could record it live.

I could easily play similar beats to that one (or that exact one) and play to a metronome. I really just decided to do this on a whim of me playing free form, wouldn't be hard to play a similar phrase bang on to a click track.

I think I will.

Done - played to a click track @ 110bpm for you..

http://picosong.com/FmNn/

After listening to what I recorded, I think I made it a bit too syncopated...even though I played at a steady 110bpm, the backbeat hits at different points from bar to bar. I guess I sort of hear/imagine other instruments over what I play, and I play as though there's someone already grooving in and around the pulse that I create.

If it's too hard to jam over, I can easily play with less syncopation. Also at varying BPM depending on what you're comfortable with. I'd like to hear someone groove over this, even if it's just for 30 seconds.

Yeah, the syncopation made it pretty tough to plan any sort of structure. This little bit took quite a while to do, and it's even pretty choppy and abrupt. At least you can kind of see the style I was hearing in my head.

jam5

And because I'm feeling random, a tune I wrote with General MIDI when I was totally drunk.

Cheers!

I don't really like the sound of drums all by themselves. I do like the rhythm they give songs, but without other instruments and working as a team, I just can't enjoy them.

Oh, nice! That's actually the sort of groove I had in my head while I was playing it originally, it's pretty cool to actually hear someone put something over the top of it.

I'm not at home over the next few days, when I get back I'll put up something with a more consistent backbeat. All-up it only takes me about 5 minutes to make these, I just record, convert it to mp3 and then upload it. I think I'll just do a whole chunk of them at varying BPM with varying levels of syncopation/complexity and then upload maybe five at a time and you can pick and choose?

Anyway I think it says something to share creations even when you're not really 'happy' with the finished product. Sharing in the creative process with someone when you're making music is a lot of fun.

Understandable, I don't think you're in the minority there anyway. I personally love the sound of drumming no matter what it is, but I feel that way about guitar - I appreciate and enjoy the melody it can bring, but on its own I lose interest quickly.

Yes, sharing the process is a hoot. Just as rewarding as releasing a polished piece of music in some cases.

Syncopation isn't a problem in principle as long as the time signature stays constant (and is discernible). I'd be happy to poke at some other drum beats soon. An interesting rhythm is often what my own music lacks. It might be a valuable exercise.
