I had one of those moments today, that very occasionally happens, when time stands still and takes a breath. I was grocery shopping in the local supermarket, just minding my own business, as usual. Typically in public I don't pay much attention to anyone in particular, nor to everyone in general. I wasn't in any special place, just thinking about a few problems I have at the moment. I walked around the corner of an aisle, and there she was, just standing there. Slim, pretty but not uniquely beautiful, perhaps with a hint of that fragility that I find so strangely irresistible, I don't know. She had a trolley, a young boy sitting inside, perhaps 18 months. I didn't consciously look at her, she was just right in front of me, and as I took a step she turned and looked up at me. As her eyes touched mine, time stopped.
It was brief, and innocent, neither drawn out nor charged. Then I was past her, and I walked on without looking back. I don't know what had happened. It was not anything like an exchange between a man and a woman, not that mutually interested or attracted look. It wasn't anything I have ever experienced as chemistry, or curiosity, or fire. Some people say the eyes are windows to the soul. I could almost believe that. It was like for an instant I saw another beings soul, clear, pure, unadulterated.
How... very... magical...
Anyone else have moments like these? Times when the fabric of the world holds so much more than it would seem, even if only for a heartbeat? A breath that stands clear and purely beautiful in the haze and mist of memory?
