Behind you, kicking you in the ass
Just found this forum an hour or so ago. Signed up and made one comment already. I got some exploring to do but I like what I see so far. I've wasted too much time online arguing over politics at various political blogs under a different name. I love following politics or perhaps I should say I follow politics intently. Love may not be the right term.
Anyway, hope to make your acquiantance(s). Don't let my name or avatar fool you. I chose them because that is how I appear to those who don't understand.

Okay, maybe grumpy is fair sometimes.

I'm the same way... A couple years ago I got interested in politics and learned as much as I could about... then Ron Paul came out of nowhere and I got excited. Then I heard from most of the people around me how he was viewed as a crackpot and I'm thinking, "But I share a lot of those ideas..." So then my interest became figuring out what country I should move to cause apparently this one doesn't want to become what I think would be best for it.

Now I don't follow it anymore, but that's mostly due to my decision to stop watching television (no more Daily Show updates). I still taunt my girlfriend by supporting Paul on occasion (she's a strong liberal democrat and works in politics). I think I'll write him in, but my hopes of that making a difference have been dashed.

(Since you like talking about politics I thought I'd get us started right away :P )

New Zealand. Its beautiful, under populated and one of its most important industries is agriculture. Over half the energy production is from water. If you like sports the All Blacks are fun to watch. It sits well inside the edges of its tectonic plate, so earthquakes are VERY unlikely.

Its certainly not perfect. The economy is highly invested in international trade and tourism is the other largest segment of the economy. So if you expect an energy collapse, this is the place to go. If you expect an international trade collapse, it is probably no better than anywhere else.

Still, islands have a nice feel about them. Only one border you have to worry about. Though you will have to worry about floating refugees if things get really bad. I'm still working on my space station plan. That's one place no one can get me.

New Zealand is where I've told people I'll move to if McCain is elected. How I'll afford it remains a mystery but I'm sure I will think of something. If not, I'll just go "off the grid" and fend for myself

Eastern Oregon is a good place to lay low. Lots of sparsely populated farm land, and there's the cascade mountains to run to if you REALLY need to get lost.

I'm still pushing for the Independent Republic of Cascadia. Want to sign the petition? (IRC, get it? ;) )

Oh, I forgot to mention that the country has only one venomous creature of any kind (spider in this case) and most residents have never seen one.

No don't join the sheep f#(%@*$

Come to Australia, if it's poisonous we've got one.
Snakes
Spiders
Scorpions
Wasps
Hornets
Bees
Ants (yes ants)
Octopuses
Stingrays
Jellyfish
The cone shell (one of the deadliest invertebrates in the world)
(the reason why tourists are encouraged not to pick up shells)

lol, I was wondering how long it would take for an Aussie to speak up :p

I think most people want to avoid things like funnel webs and stonefish. Maybe I'm mistaken.

Granted Australia has one enormous advantage over New Zealand under potential economic collapse and that's mineral resources. Unfortunately it also has a lot of its economy invested in international trade and tourism/services.

In the final analysis, its mostly climate that draws me to NZ. I don't care for consistently hot weather and there plenty of temperate zones there. Weather-wise its been described as similar to GB, which is similar to where I live, which is attractive.

Then again I have a friend in Melbourne, so we'll see.

If you're talking about risk, Cognisant, don't forget the drop-bears! Maybe not poisonous but beware!

I'd move to New Zealand except there actually is a high risk of serious seismic activity having an impact on survival. Plus I'm told the place is next to the world's biggest oceanic caldera. Imagine if that blows. The islands are already volcanically active, and as the Earth's crust adjusts to massive shifts in load with the loss of polar/glacial ice... well, I'd say we're in for an exciting time. New Zealand's a front-row seat!

Now, as for peaceful temperate islands. I'm not moving. My plans for succession from the mainland are nearly complete. :D

But all your poor tassies are dying from face tumors! :( If I'm to consider Tasmania you gotta save them first :p Maybe teach them to not make those awful noises, but otherwise :D

Then again I suppose as long as I can get myself a pet sugar glider, I'll be fine.

What, drop bears aren’t enough?
You want a paratrooper possum too?
Anyway drop bears are great fun, sure they'll claw out your eyes and eat you brain, but they're still cuddly.

Ironic that I should live in the land of strange creatures.

I'm not certain, but I believe that in both Australia and New Zealand they'd like to see some evidence of prosperity on your part before allowing you in: Either you have a job lined up there or you're bringing in a lot of money. Not the kind of immigration context we're experiencing here in the states, where we tacitly encourage the destitute, the stupid and the hopeless to come in because they'll work cheap.....

Anyone got any skinny on New Zealand immigration restrictions?

I'm not too worried. With NZ's weak tech industry I'm sure they'll be happy to take in someone with an MS in Chemistry (even though I hope I never work in the industry as a chemist).

In fact, I'm sure most of us just justify us being considered "brain gain" if given the opportunity.

Who wants to know?
I'm too late to give a greeting, so... NZ has quite a lot of doctors, if I'm not wrong (or at least medical industry workers). I don't think I'll work there. The animal/ plant import restrictions will probably not be helpful for my dream job (in plant genetic engineering).

@Decaf: If they have a weak tech industry, will it be good if you go there? (lack of facilities and all that. I'm not sure about this point)

Immigration: NZ and Aust have reciprocal citizenship rights, but immigration requirements into NZ are much slacker.

Since Australia is so very hard on immigrants, it's actually smartest to gain NZ citizenship first, then move to Aust as a kiwi citizen.

Unless of course, you actually want to stay in NZ..

Chicken or the Egg. They can't attract tech businesses if they don't have professional residents to work at them. By increasing the population of a labor pool you increase the draw to expand the industry. Besides, the industry isn't dead, its just weak (but yes it would initially be hard to find a job). At least that's how I see it. Not sure if that's how immigration sees it, but I don't see what they have to gain by excluding skilled labor.

I didn't know that about reciprocal citizenship. That could be useful (aside from being called a sheep#$@%# whenever I visit).

It's high in the middle and round on both ends...o
Hmmm...I like your user name. I think many INTP's can on occasion seem...inappropriate.
I live in a community where most people are in the E, Sand J modes...I love annoying the crap out of them...and without saying a word.
At the same time we do not want to look a fool in our behavior.
It is a delicate balance.

Here's an interesting addition to the argument...

P.S. I don't rickroll people, so don't be afraid of my links.
