I'm probably not the only one who does this. There is an ad I've been seeing on YouTube recently where a guy does this in various scenarios (irl I'm more slick about it than he is).

The other day I was eating lunch from a fast food joint and said, "mmm, this is a tasty burger" (Pulp Fiction). Sometimes I've told people "that's just like, your opinion man" or when they're messing with me, "you're entering a world of pain" (The Big Lebowski). A few times people will compliment me on being funny and I'll ask, "what do you mean I'm funny, funny how?" (Goodfellas)

I try not be be totally obvious about it, so it goes over most people's heads, but I just can't resist doing it when I'm in a casual situation that is relatable to a movie scene I like.

I used to do it a lot until I had the misfortune of dealing with an ENTJ that did it constantly. Now it's just a turn-off.

I don't respect it as a humour form.

I see it as a form of in-group/out-group control.

Reference -> You get it -> in-grouped
Reference -> You don't get it -> out-grouped

(On a sliding scale of course).

It's recently been brought to my attention that I do it constantly, which annoys me because I'm not conscious of it, and would choose not to do it if I was. Oh well.

I never get it when you do it, do I do it?

Why aren't you using ad block?

I do it, but typically only with folks I know who have a movie range like mine, so it's a way for us to share something because they'll come back with another movie quote to see if I catch it.

... although occasionally it's kind of fun from a trolly way of slipping it in to see if anyone catches it. (Kind of like when I used to play for church services, and I'd take a real shitty pop song and adlib it for background worship music in that musical style to see if anyone would recognize what I was actually playing. Typically, they did not. heh.)

I do this a lot. For the most part, I explicitly try to make obscure references that no-one gets. I suppose it's sort of a way of finding out if anyone else likes the same things. (And they can be so obscure that it's basically just a game with myself to see how many speech plagiarisms I can fit into a conversation without anyone noticing.) If I know people will get the reference, I think I'm actually less likely to make it. Unless it's a really perfect moment. Can't let those get by.

For example: the phrasing "Obscure references that no-one gets" is (If I recall) a line from Steins;gate. But upon listening for this line last time I watched it, I didn't hear it. This means I either made it up, or it was the ONLY IN THE ENGLISH SUB.

That's about the level of obscurity I tend to use. Sometimes less, sometimes more.
It's not so much incrowd/outcrowd control as it is fishing in the dead sea just for shits n giggles. I use 'em like easter eggs in the TV series that is my life.

Using movie/tv references is like masturbating in public. Nobody is really happy that you're doing it, but it can still be amusing to do once in a while.

I felt like that at one point in my life when I was surrounded by certain kinds of people where television was the only viable topic of conversation. It was horrible.

If I see an opportunity, I'll use a movie/TV show/Song Lyric/Computer Game/Shakespearean/Biblical quote. Whatever fits the humour of the situation. But only with someone who I know will understand the reference. There's no humour if they will not get the reference.

Earlier today a co-worker thoguht he'd made a huge mistake. So after helping to fix it, I told him, "the value of this will be added to your life debt." Of course this only worked because I know he had also seen Continuum. when a large spider is found I have been know to say, "that is a proper Sheelob - I am not going after that thing without the light of Elendil and an Elvish blade."

On Sunday, after an online game with my son, I poked at him and said in a Darth Vader voice, "I find your lack of PVP skill disturbing." This was soon followed by, "Mama! Just killed a noob! Put a gun against his head, pushed ma mouse down now he's dead! Mama! Oooh-ooh-ooh-ooh!" Yes, I know, childish humour and most of you wouldn't find it funny, but like I said it's only funny if they get the reference.

People actually enjoy when I masturbate in public. They always stop what they're doing to watch it and even invite the police.

My intj roommate is a walking movie reference, drives me up the wall sometimes. Its as if he cannot come up with new and original responses of his own, and severely hampers the creative process. I dont retain any but the most memorable movie quotes, and why would i? I understand how some relate able quotes can break the ice for further conversation, but to use quotes constantly and as the main recipitor further into social exchange just feels like ego stroking. It disarms others ability to articulate a response.

I only make these kinds of referencea if I am certain everyone i am with will get it.

My dad (ESTJ) is always slow to get them / make them, but always gets a great laugh out of them.

I rather dislike how my brother (INFP) uses them, because he does it ALL the time. He uses them and expects you comment on it instantly. If you don't basically says, "aww you poor thing, you don't get it do you?" My thoughts are usually: https://media1.giphy.com/media/AyxNeeAtEIk0M/200w.gif

Yea its the same shit, INTJ roommate makes a quote then laughs while others just kinda go quiet, conversationally disarmed, and then he says "tell me you have seen (insert obscure movie that nobody gives a shit about)" Then when anyone says that they have not he goes on a patronizing ego tangent on how he cant believe that nobody has seen the movie and how we should all stop what we are doing in life to watch said movie. If i cared enough to remember all these obscure titles i would have a long and dreary list of brainwash.

Does seem to be an obsessive compulsive nervousness on some people's parts.

I might try to make references, except mine are typically so old, most people wouldn't get them. I've saved a few of my favorites over the course of my life, and at times I'll say them to myself, because they amuse me. "I will kill him!" [Hint: Sting.] Wouldn't it be a pity if I'm butchering some quotes.

Horror has a face...And you must make a friend of horror. Horror and moral terror are your friends. If they are not then they are enemies to be feared. They are truly enemies.
