One of the reasons for confusion around this topic is that in the 50s and 60s when eastern philosophy was becoming more available in western civilizations a set of words from eastern philosophy got translated as "ego." However a better translation would be "delusions."
Destroying the western concept of ego, the one described by people like Jung, would be devastating and counter to the goals of eastern philosophy. In this sense a healthy ego is vital to overall well-being and one's spiritual development.
The spiritual paths of the east seek to destroy delusions. One of the more advanced and meta delusions is the delusion of a separate self, and this contributes to this ego/delusions confusion. However it is a healthy ego that helps get you to that understanding that everything is inter-connected, that all inter-is, and what you thought you were is just an expression within a larger phenomena where there is no distinct autonomous ideas of self. They call this no self.
Hope that helps.
