Folie à deux: When crazy gets contagious

I was surfing 9gag today when I saw a post regarding the Waukesha, Wisconsin stabbings. In summary, two 12 year old girls tried to stab another girl to death (19 times) after luring the victim to the woods. The victim somehow managed to survive and got rescued by a cyclist while the first two was caught and will be tried as adults. In their defense, the girls said that they're trying to impress Slenderman, a fictional creepypasta character.

I read more about the story and found out that an expert says that Folie à deux is a probable source of the crazy behavior. Basically only one of the girls were crazy and having delusions about Slenderman. She only managed to convince the other one to tag along and plan to kill their friend.

Any thoughts on the crime and the mental condition or perhaps we at INTPf are sharing each other's crazies for years now?

I don't know anything about those girls' personalities or lives, but that age is impressionable and I get the feeling that life in the US North/Midwest is more entrenched in urban myths and general folk eccentricity than other regions.

True. The article said that this type of delusion is natural in younger children and we usually call them as imaginary friends. However, these girls seem to have not outgrown such fantasies. I never knew that make believe can turn deadly.

I sometimes wonder if certain kinds of crazy are contagious. Actually I'm fairly certain of it. Folie a deux only furthers my certainty. If I deeply trust someone I'm more likely to believe them if they tell me something outlandish in seriousness. Reality is only what we define it to be as a species (or on a smaller scale a culture or even family).

I'm going down the rabbit hole on this one. We are all crazy deluded creatures.

I agree. I think parents should monitor their children more especially for signs of mental illness and act accordingly. The number of electronic gadgets and applications we have at our disposal lessens the excuses for negligence. Of course, such activities get less restrictive as the child matures.

Beats me. American laws are weird. Perhaps it's because the pair planned their murder for months while the Ohio resident just went Ax Crazy on her mom.

True. I think the "normal" effects of the illness are only paranoia and delusions. Perhaps the two Wisconsin girls have another mental illness that was comorbid with this one which induce the violent attack.

Off topic:

By virtue of French being a sexy language, folie à deux (madness shared by two) sounds like a downgrade of a ménage à trois ("household of three"). I wonder what four would be.
