What is/was your college major?

Just out of curiosity. It seems like there are a lot of people on here with specialized knowledge, which made me wonder what everyone's educational background was. College major, postgrad degree etc. I wonder if the answers will be skewed towards particular fields. I guess it would be more interesting if you also said what attracted you to that particular field. In retrospect, what do you wish you went in to?

Me too. I started with Engineering (which my dad, an EE, recommended against) and switched to Physics. I graduated but never worked in the field, alas.

It was International Relations (History/Poli-sci hybrid) but then the goddamn Soviets called it quits and I lost interest. Dropped out, worked odd jobs then went to cooking school and became a chef.

I don't post much here, but I want to give my input.

When I was in high school, I wanted to do business.
By freshman year, I found out I didn't like business and just did it because that's what everyone who doesn't have a major studies.
I took a year off school and by the time I got back, I decided to do Psychology.

...Now at the age of 21 I have decided on Dietetics/Nutrition. I want to be a nutritionist! rewarding and fulfilling of one of my great passions.

I expect to see a lot of psych/socio majors here heh..

Educational background: Associate degree in Dental Hygiene. This was a huge mistake, due to......circumstances I won't go into. I actually wanted to do a science degree. Did this for about 13 years (too long), until I finally broke the procrastination circuit and re-entered university.

Currently undertaking a Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management. Started out doing a straight B. Sci. before I transferred due to other.....circumstances. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy the Environmental Science stream as it is a highly generalised degree program. I voiced my concern with the subject coordinators and they pretty much allowed me to tailor things to my interests. Happy now. Special field(s) are/will be wetland/river ecology/soil science/ornithology......? I know for sure I will keep specialising, probably end up with some kind of Ph.D.

Got work on the side doing community based project management, research assistant for one of my lecturers and field assistant with the local inland fisheries. Fun

I grew up surrounded by nature and animals. I was a lonely child in the sense that I spent a lot of time by myself but enjoyably so (didn't like the games other children played), so I spent a lot of time studying everything around me. It became a habit, hence the insatiable curiosity and need to understand everything. My father was a big traveller and he inspired me to do the same. Adventure was in my blood right from the start. A science background will suit my restless lifestyle. For me, science is a lifestyle although I'm no fanatic. I go into every field with a healthy dose of non-attachment and scepticism. I guess science allows me to study the things that fascinate me. And get paid for it, bonus.

Besides all that, I always wanted play an instrument as music is my other great interest. Piano and/or violin. I seem to be drawn to solving other people's problems as well....not sure if that is a good thing. I guess someone will slap me if it becomes too much. I would also like to write a book or two....but one thing at the time...... ugh, think I've gone off track now, shut up

philosophy because I loved it. I took an intro class and found that all the questions and thoughts philosophers had were questions i thought about on the daily. I don't so much wish I did some other major, as i wish i had more time to learn everything i could get my hands on.

Marketing... thinking about a minor in psychology. I want to be less on the end of sales and more towards the end of examining buyer behavior… basically the psychological aspects of it.

But I would study art and design. Then, I might study psychology.
I have no idea what minors and majors are. Can somebody explain? I haven't heard of those terms in Dutch.

Also, you guys have studied some cool things! If I were better in maths I'd also choose for something more neurological... Or something astronomy-related.

Neuroscience for doctorate at MSU.

My biggest interests are neuroplasticity and psychopharmacology.

Seems like a lot of psych majors. I was a psych major, chem minor, MD. If I could do it all over again I would probably do something in physics or the culinary arts.

Never a true passion for me, I dislike overspecialization. I took anthropology rather passively, its a very holistic, cross disciplinary subject, which includes biological, cultural and linguistic aspects and different classes varied extremely. Though I am interested in understanding humanity.

The only benefit I get now is correcting people when they try to make some grand point using a false premise about 'human nature'.

Computer Information Systems at the moment. It has taught me that I do, in fact, like programming, as was suspected. It has also taught me that the rest of Computer Information Systems is extremely fucking boring.

I'm considering double majoring in Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. However, my college of choice (choice being made by cost and proximity to home) doesn't have a Biomedical Engineering degree, so I'm a bit torn on how thats going to work out for me.

Actually quite the contrary, I don't like partying much. I mean I do here and there but I get bored of it and I just hate the small talk involved (because I suck at it). I really like small group get-togethers with people that aren't loud and obnoxious. Definitely a lot more girls than guys in the major though, which would be nice if I went to a school where the girls were attractive.

The reason I'm dropping out is because I haven't been able to get my shit together for various INTP-related reasons and my parents don't want to waste their money on me failing a bunch of classes. It's fair reasoning. It actually feels like a big weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Now I just need to figure out where to go from here. Obviously I'll have to get a job. But do I want to go back to school eventually? We shall see.

Im a psychology major and a freshman. If you want to know something about psychology, ask me, ive dedicated much of my loner time to study it online. The internet allowed me to discover i had anxiety and depression, which saved me. Before i had a laptop, i just thought i was a weird fuck. I remember my first night embarking on the quest to discover myself. I typed in Google, "why am i so quiet?". Eventually it led me to where i am now...still depressed and stuff, but at least i know i have a disorder. Before i knew, my parents just told me i was a freak and the creepy quiet kid. I know now that i have a chemical inbalance that is most likely the result of my DNA. My mom is depressed, and my grandma is a schizo...hopefully i dont develope schizophrenia haha. I guess itd be kinda cool. Id give myself to scientists so they could study me.

I started out as undeclared. The next year I declared English literature and realized it was not for me at all (perhaps linguistics; the problem with literature is professors would allow for ANY interpretation even if it didn't make much sense).
From that I switched to environmental engineering.

Then I dropped out because I realized I have no desire to be a part of this system. It's completely messed up.
The problem is I have a huge debt to pay off, so I decided to join the Navy... ironically. I did it because I've had experience in ROTC and loved it (I love exerting myself physically as much as I love thinking. also the chain of command is incredibly efficient). Nothing is set in stone yet. What I am hoping to do is be at sea. I'm not too worried about what I do because I know no matter what, I can adapt.

I can understand why someone like Einstein would choose to work in a patent office instead of a profession that would allow him to use his abilities. I much rather have a simple job where I am able to think as much as I want about anything than be forced to put thought into something I don't necessarily care about.

Ahh they don't give student loans where I'm from, and that's exactly the prime reason why my parents wouldnt pay for it! I wouldn't get a job, or it would be very difficult. I don't mind marketing though, I will probably end up doing a minor in psychology.
