If you are intelligent does it mean you have to be good at making strategies?

I have been told my whole life i am brilliant, I have taken many IQ tests and always score above avg and i was playing chess the other day and couldn't beat the comp. I may just be bad at chess but does intelligent mean you are capable of using it xD?

Apparently you can use it well enough to take an IQ test effectively.

If you are intelligent you should understand that chess is too fucking complicated for you to be instant-good at unless you are some kind of savant

Intelligence is variable. It works differently in different people and their talents are evident in certain and specific categories. So no. You don't have to be good at strategy. I'd call a person, who is good at strategy, clever. I'd call a person who is good at the strategy of life, wise. I would call a person who has good memory and sufficient knoweledge, intelligent. Most IQ tests only test certain skills. So you if you do well on them that means you are good at 'those skills' it is really meaningless otherwise..

side thought*************

As far as IQ goes, it is better for determining a baseline but it cannot define a genius. I often wondered if Einstein would even do well on today's IQ tests and on what areas he would excel in. I suspect he would do well in some areas and do poorly in others.

Better examples might be Mozart, Beethoven, Shakespeare, etc..

IMO...There is no better and more accurate IQ test than Life.

Chess epitomizes deep refinement. Nobody has ever picked up a chess set and held their own vs. a grandmaster. It doesn't measure much of anything unless you're played and reached your limit of skill. Even then, as people have mentioned, it only tests some capacities.

People have always been saying that I'm smart. I'm slightly above average, at best. There are also some people who think I'm a little retarded so for a while I wasn't actually sure how adept I was; it depends on who you're around at the moment and the value of a product.

Even the most brilliant people need to train A LOT. Instant Experts only exist in stories.

Second, there are multiple types of Intelligence. Perhaps yours just clicked with IQ tests.

How did you manage to infer that from my statement? Have you even tested your intelligence on other stuff aside from IQ tests?

chess is more about learning opening, counter opening, strategies and counter strategies , it's not something that depend solely on raw capacity of analysis , but also how to apply strategies and how to counter the opponent strategies, having high iq won't make you a born chess master either lol

Slightly different topic but I would prefer someone that is knowledgeable than the current definition of intelligent. Someone that is knowledgeable or knows his opponent already has the answer and what strategy is coming at him and what one works best against it.

Traditional intelligence as defined by most people now days is highly overrated. I know heaps of intelligent people and many are useless. A knowledgeable person will always be useful in his area. That said if you are intelligent you can gain knowledge, and if you are you probably have.

In what area are you brilliant?

A legitimate IQ test is not going to be found online, typically. You'll need to be tested by a certified tester with certified materials in a controlled setting.

Why don't you take it up a notch. I assume you're still studying yes? Why don't you join an inter-district or interstate academic contest? I'm pretty sure your bio teacher will give the necessary recommendations if s/he really believes in your talents.

Anyways, there are a lot of worthy foes in these contests and I'm sure you'll get the proof of intelligence that you want.

It would be more interesting to dump him and a few other hopefuls on a small deserted island and tell them only the smartest person will leave the island alive.

Now THAT is a test for real-life, applied intelligence.

Shiving people with a broken stick isn't really a test of intelligence.

Dump them across a city island like Manhattan with explosive implants.

Let's assume you are brilliant. So what then?

Let's assume you are not. So what then?

If you are intelligent it doesn't mean anything in itself, unless you try yourself, you won't be able to tell with certainty that you are good at something, or that you have the potential to become good.

You can only assume.

Don't expect a forum to provide you with definite answers to these kinds of theoretical problems, any answer will tend to be detached from your reality.

Yes well we have gone way off track from the post , it would be fun to do that academic test but like..i hate people and i dont want to be around them if i can help it. i dont think im smart, i feel like im just surrounded by dumb people.(may have spelled that wrong 0_o) i feel like intelligence is how you use what you know, not so much as of what you know.

There are different theories of intelligence. According to Sternberg's, the component of intelligence you may lack is experiential or creative intelligence, the ability to use your knowledge and experiences to solve problems in new, creative ways. You have componential/analytic intelligence since that is the thinking skills to solve problems like those in IQ tests. Perhaps you also need to be innovative to beat the computer in chess.

I think Michael Bay would definitely enjoy Cog's idea better, if he had to film one.

Read "Lord of the Flies" for what may be a practical real life example. Better yet don't read it. Just goes there at the time of the plane crash and see how you do. You will be the only girl so you will have to masquerade as a boy adding to the challenge.:D

Don't bother to report if you don't make it to the end, but report back here if you do. I have all confidence in you.

Being smart - by any standard - doesn't mean that you'll automatically be good at everything you try.
